Island Peak Climbing

Imja-Tse, more popular as Island peak, is one of the major climbing mountain and busy trekking peak in the Eastern Nepal Himalayas. It is located right above the summer village of Chukhung, at the top of the Imja Khola Valley in the Khumbu region. The mountain was named ‘Island peak’ by Eric Shipton during 1951 due to it’s location which does resembles as an island in a sea of ice when observed from Dingboche. Though later re-named as ‘Imja-Tse’ in 1983, its former name ‘Island’ remains popular and more recognized.

Though the climbing involved is technically straightforward, use of an ice axe and crampons comes handy. It is fairly a challenging climb with a mixed rock and ice wall at a slope of around 45° leading to the narrow summit ridge which happens to be the trickiest part of the climb. Nevertheless, climbing trip to Island peak has been fulfilling the wishes of many climbers, amateur or professionals, who are seeking the thrill of adventure and are aspired to take climbing program beyond basic trekking. With extremely glaciated West Face increasing from the Lhotse glacier, the summit is fascinating. Island peak truly is the extension of the South Ridge of Lhotse Shar divided by a small col. The ridge mounting to the south from this position leads to the crest of Island peak itself. The expansion of this ridge sliding downwards South-West is the section of the standard route of ascent and directs to the South summit.

Island peak offers some of the most remarkable panorama of the Himalayas in the Khumbu region. The summit offers outstanding views of Nuptse (7,879m), Lhotse (8,501m), Lhotse Middle Peak (8,410m) and Lhotse Shar (8,383m) creating a semi circle in the north as well as Makalu (8475m) in the east plus Baruntse and Amadablam in the south add more to the magnificent and splendid mountain drama.
