Mera’s first winning ascent was by Col. Jimmy Rodgers and Sen Tenzing precisely on the 20th of May, 1953. Then the trek starts with pursuing the trail that crosses a high pass into a remote valley and gradually acclimatize as the following move will be towards the base camp and set up a high camp on the glacier, from where the summit is attempted.
Attempting Mera from the West and South Faces is hard as it possess difficult technical routes. Nevertheless, it‘s an excellent trek combined with an amazing journey into the ancient Sherpa-Land where people still graze yaks, cook on yak-dung and live a very simple life.
The standard route from ‘Mera La’ is technically straightforward ascent, yet in the conditions such as after a heavy snow fall or when the mazes of crevasses are open, the path can be long and challenging. All in all, a trip to Mera is an incredible Himalayan outing mix together with climbing fun and the most rewarding feature of the trip is the amazing opportunity to visit the remote yet un-spoiled region of Nepal plus there is always the joy of going over 6,000 meters.
