Some of the northern parts of Nepal especially those bordering with Tibet of China were restricted for the visitors. There were two motives for the restriction, conservation of local environment & culture, and Chinese sensitivity along its border during the Cold War & Sino-India War. After the ending of the Cold War & reestablishment of the multiparty system in Nepal in the 90s, the restriction was lifted on the condition of travelling only with the government recognized travel company. These were the Trans-Himalayan areas of Manang and Dolpo where the French filmmaker Eric Valley made the Oscar winning movie The Caravan.
