Dress Code for Visiting Monasteries, Dzongs, Temples and Festivals in Bhutan

Bhutanese government wants to preserve its cultural heritage and the religious way of life of its people. Its government wants visitors to pay respect its cultural heritage, tradition and it efforts to preserve them. It is essential for visitors to wear proper attire while being on Monasteries, dzongs, temples & festivals.

Here are some dressing tips if you are intending to visit Monasteries, Dzongs, Temples and Festivals in Bhutan:

  1. Dress modestly and don’t wear revealing clothes, formal dress code will be considered best.
  2. No shorts are allowed for both men and women, you are supposed to cover your knee. As a woman if you are wearing dress make sure that your dress is more than knee length.
  3. If your shirt is collarless then it has to be a full sleeve, however if your shirt has collar then it can be half sleeve as well.
  4. You are not allowed to wear hats in the precincts of Dzongs or religious establishments.
  5. Also, umbrella shouldn’t be carried or used inside the monasteries.
  6. No flip flops are allowed while being in monasteries, you have to wear a proper shoe while attending the festivals.
