Bhutan is quite a unique country; it is the only Buddhist kingdom and have set or rules it wants its visitors to follow. Tourism of Bhutan is regulated by “Low volume High Impact Tourism” policy. The nation wants visitors to explore the beautiful country without them influencing their culture and negatively impacting its environment. As a result of this effort, the cultural heritage and environment has remained unhinged and pristine from several decades back. Here are some list of things that you must do and don’t while being in Bhutan:
Thing you should do while visiting Bhutan:
- Have a printed VISA clearance copy at the time of check-in for the flight to Bhutan
- Follow the proper dress etiquette. Please make sure your dress code doesn’t harm the religious sentiments.
- Be courteous to old people and treat them with respect.
- Carry enough cash as many businesses do not accept credit cards in rural areas.
- Respond to the assigned tour guide and follow their instruction.
- Do register at customs as you need to show the proof of their existence while exiting the country.
- Do walk clockwise while in Chortens (Stupas) or Mani(prayer) walls.
- Do follow traffic rules and regulations.
List of “Don’ts” while visiting Bhutan:
- Avoid tight/skin revealing clothes while visiting religious sites as they might be considered vulgar.
- Remove sun caps while visiting temples or Dzongs
- Avoid slangs while visiting religious sites.
- Do not feed birds/animals while visiting natural sites.
- Do not smoke anywhere you like. Look for the designated smoking sone.
- Do not point finger at people or art.
