Ghorepani Poonhill Trek – A peace of heaven on earth

Ghorepani Poonhill Trek is one of the easiest treks route which can be accomplished by anyone. The Poon hill trek is carried out at an elevation below 3210m so there is no age barrier as anyone can easily do this trek. This phenomenal and refreshing trek offers the spectacular sight of some of the highest and the most beautiful mountains in the world that includes Mount Dhaulagiri, Mount Annapurna, Mount Machhapuchchhre, Mount Himalchuli among others. The trail goes through the beautiful villages, rhododendron offering the beautiful natural sceneries.

Where is Poon hill in Nepal?
Poon hill is situated at an elevation of 3210m (10,532ft) Poon hill is one of the major destinations for the travelers located in Myagdi District in the Dhaulagiri Zone. Poon hill lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area. Poon Hill offers mesmerizing views of some of the highest and the most beautiful mountains in the world that includes Annapurna South, Machhapuchchhre, Himalchuli among others.

Poon hill is the most popular viewpoint which can be reached within 45 minutes from Ghorepani and offers the spectacular sight of some of the highest and the most beautiful mountains in the world that includes Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Machhapuchchhre, Himalchuli among others. The view is fantastic and is different but probably as good as the views even within the Annapurna Sanctuary. Travelers can observe the entire mountain ranges covered in golden colors as a due cause of light reflection by the early sun’s ray. The hilltop is famous for the mesmerizing sunrise view over Annapurna Mountain.

Where is Ghorepani Nepal? 
Ghorepani is situated at an elevation of 2875m (9,430ft) and is one of the biggest villages in the Annapurna mountain of Nepal. It’s typically an easy 45 minutes walking from Ghorepani to reach the Poonhill. Ghorepani offers panoramic 360° views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Himalayas on a clear day along with the spectacular view of Dhaulagiri I, II, III, IV, V, Tukuche, Dhampus, Nilgiri, Annapurna South, Barah Sikhar, Machhapuchhre.

How to get to Ghorepani and Poon hill?
Poonhill can be easily reached from Pokhara. So first you have to travel to Pokhara from Kathmandu. There are two alternatives to reach Pokhara from Kathmandu either by bus, private vehicle or flight. It is just a 25 minutes flight from Kathmandu whereas about 6-7 hours ride from the bus. From Pokhara it is one hour’s drive towards Nayapul from where the trek towards the Poonhill commences. It takes 2 days to reach the Ghorepani. On the first day, you trek for Tikhedhunga or Ulleri and then proceed further the next day for Ghorepani.

Poon hill is just an hour or 45 minutes’ walk from the Ghorepani. Poon hill is best known for the sunrise and sunset view so it is visitor choice whether they want to witness sunset or sunrise view depending on which they can visit the viewpoint early in the morning for sunrise and late afternoon for sunset view.

Where to stay during Poon hill Trek?
Abundant tea houses and lodges are located on the way to Poon Hill with a favorable environment and comfortable accommodation. The teahouse and lodges offer wide food varieties among which the Nepali Dinner Set is the most popular one.

When is best Time to do Ghorepani Poonhill Trek?
The best time for Ghorepani Poon hill trek is from September to May leaving behind the monsoon season. This place receives the heavy rainfall so it would be best to skip the monsoon season for the trek as the trail becomes slippery during the monsoon season.

Do I need trek permit for Ghorepani Poonhill Trek?
As the Poon hill lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP), one must obtain a permit to trek through this route. The entry permit fee for ACAP is NRs. 3000 (US$30 – Approx) per person. One also must obtain a permit to visit the monuments of the area along with local monuments.

For safety, all trekkers in Nepal must acquire the Trekkers’ Information Management Systems (TIMS) Card before trekking. TIMS Card is mandatory to ensure the safety and security of trekkers in the general trekking areas.

TIMS Card fees are as follows – Group trekker: NRs. 1,000; (US$ 9 – Approx) Free individual trekker (FIT): NRs. 2,000 (USD 18 – Approx), per trekking route per person per entry.

2 Nights 3 Days Poonhill Trek itinerary from Pokhara

Day 01: Drive Pokhara to Nayapul and trek to Ulleri 6-7 hours, 8 miles
Early in the morning drive for about 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach Nayapul (1030m) and then commence hike towards the Ulleri (1960m) for about 6-7 hours covering the distance of 8 miles. The trail first slowly and steadily climbs to Birethanti and then ascends towards the Ulleri, which is the stop point of the day. Overnight at Lodge.

Day 02: Ulleri to Ghorepani (2875m) 6 hours, 7.2 miles
After the early breakfast, start the trek leaving behind the Ulleri and getting closer to the wonderful Ghorepani (2875m). It takes about 6 hours to reach the Ghorepani from Ulleri and covers the distance of 7.2 miles. En-route enjoys some great mountain panorama towards the north. After a few hours of trekking, the trail leads to rhododendron and oak forests and finally reaches Ghorepani. Overnight at Lodge.

Day 03: Ghorepani to Poonhill (3210) 1 hour and back to Nayapul 7 hours
Early in the morning hike towards the Poonhill for about an hour to witness the mesmerizing sunrise view along with the spectacular view of beautiful mountains in the world including Annapurna South, Machhapuchchhre, Himalchuli among others. After getting the panoramic view from the Poonhill trek down to the Nayapul for about 7 hours via same route, then finally drive back to Pokhara.

4 Nights 5 Days Ghorepani Poonhill Ghandruk Trek Itinerary

Day 01: Drive Pokhara to Nayapul and trek to Ulleri 6-7 hours, 8 miles

Day 04:Trek Tadapani to Ghandruk (1952m) 5 hours, 5 miles
After breakfast, start the trek leaving behind Tadapani where the trail first descends to Baisi Kharka. It then crosses few streams, forests and finally reaches Ghandruk. Ghandruk is a beautiful mountain village specially in-habitat by Gurung community. The village also commands great mountain sceneries of peaks like Annapurna South and other Himalayas in the Annapurna region. O/N Lodge.

Day 05: Trek Ghandruk to Nayapul (1070m) 5 hours, 4 miles and drive back to Pokhara
The last day of the Ghorepani Poonhill Trek and it’s going to be exciting day as basically it involves descending down almost all the time to reach Nayapul. En-route hikers will come across some great landscapes and grasslands. Upon reaching Nayapul, drive to Pokhara.

5 Nights 6 Days Ghorepani Poonhill Hot Spring Trek Itinerary

Day 04: Trek Tadapani to Jhinudanda(1750m) 7 hours, 7.5 miles
After breakfast in the Tadapani, descend to Jhinu danda and enjoy the relaxing bath in a natural hot spring. The trail goes steeply downhill towards the Jhinu and offers the great view of natural panorama of the Annapurna region. Overnight at lodge.

Day 05: Trek Jhinu to Pothana (1890m), 7 hours, 7 miles
We start our trek early in the morning after the breakfast and march for the Pothana(1890m). The trail descends towards the Pothana following some minor ascends at some times. We cross the suspension bridge over the Modi Khola (river) and reach to Landruk village. Now we descend towards the Pothana which offers the majestic view of Mount Fishtail. Overnight at Lodge.

Day 06: Trek Pothana to Phedi(1130m) 3 hours, 3 miles and drive to Pokhara
Today we just descend down towards the Phedi, so today’s trek is comparatively easy. The trail encounters the beautiful village Dhampus on its way and finally halts at Phedi (1130m). Upon reaching the Phedi get in to the private vehicle and drive back to Pokhara which takes about an hour.
