Every country has its own set of beliefs and values. It is obligatory for the tourist and visitors to be within those beliefs and values respecting their beliefs and moral values. Here are below are list of things you should do and things that you should avoid while being in Nepal.
Thing that you should do in Nepal:
- Greet: Greeting people is a reflection of showing friendliness and your amiable nature. So, whenever you see a local its always nice to smile, slightly bow and say “Namaste” to show that you respect the people of the land.
- Appropriate Dressing: Though some parts of the country it is okay to dress as you feel experience yourself, however in rural wearing exposing apparel can bring you glances, unwanted attention and hostility. So, it is better to respect the values of people and dress concealing your body and dress appropriately.
- Removing Shoes Before Entering Temple: Temple is a holy adobe of God, where they perform sacred holy rituals. It is strictly prohibited to wear shoes or sandals inside the temple premises. So, you should take off your shoes before entering temple.
- Bargain: Many businesses owner upon receiving foreigner as their customer will inflate the prices of their product. It is very essential to bargain and research before you go shopping in local markets.
- Change your Nepalese currency: Its necessary you break down bigger Nepalese currency to smaller changes, so that while doing transaction you are ready to pay and continue with your journey. It is a convenience to you as well as another party.
- Walk clockwise around temples: While walking around temple it is important that you walk clockwise so that the temple is always in your right-hand side.
- Get permission before taking photos of people, if you are inside the temple premises make sure that taking photo is allowed inside the temple. Also get permission while entering temple to make sure that you are not walking into the special procession that might be taking place inside the temple.
- Be respectful around priest and monks: It is fascinating when you see the priest and monks in temple and monasteries and you might get enthusiastic to know more about them, we should keep in our mind to not irritate them and annoy them if they do not intend to involve in any sort of conversation or verbal exchange.
- Though it was canon, that use of left hand was deemed disrespectful, we should still try to use right hand while eating, greeting, or doing religiously significant activities. Some people might still find it offensive when someone uses left hand for example while eating.
Things that you should not do while in Nepal:
- Eat beef: Cow is a holy animal, it is worshipped and revered as a deity. No one is allowed to eat beef in Nepal. Make sure while in Nepal you don’t eat beef.
- Public Display of Affection: While it might be perfectly normal to show affection i.e. kissing, hugging in public in many western countries. Public display of affection is frowned upon in public places. It’s restricted to kiss in public and you might get penalized failing to follow the rule, so you should be aware of the fact.
- Touch any sacred object: Touching object that is sacred to one community or religion of people might likely be forbidden. Not only to the tourist, but Nepalese from other ethnicity most of the times are not allowed to touch those sacred objects.
- Help Beggars: While it might be your nature to be compassionate, you should not help beggar by giving them money. If you give one beggar money it is likely that other beggars will crowd you and irritate you till, they get something out of you. They can literally ruin your day tours around temples and religious places.
- Touch someone’s hand: People in Nepal might not like to be touched by someone whom they are not acquainted with. They might feel offended and insecure. So, while conversing make sure that you don’t touch intentionally or unintentionally.
- Eat from common pot: Eating habit in Nepal is different from western culture. In Nepal there is separate plates for each person along with main pot or utensils that will contain food items with respective servicing spoon. Don’t eat directly from the main pot, and don’t take out food from the main pot with your spoon. Also while drinking water from bottle make sure that your lips doesn’t come in contact with the mouth of the vessel the water is contained in.
- Drink from the Tap water: If you are in cities, we suggest you not to drink from the tap water. However, if you are in rural areas tap water might be good for consumption, but it is always better to ask locals and inquire about the water before drinking it.
- Smoke and Drink Publicly: It is prohibited by the law to smoke and drink publicly. People might get offended upon finding you smoke and drink publicly. Smoke and drink in designated place.
- Lose your calm: If you are faced with confrontation and discord with local people, other foreigners or amongst your fellow travelers, it is suggested to not lose your calm. Talk your way out of issue, and if the situation become hostile better call police.
