Dress Code for Visiting Monastery in Tibet

Tibet is home to numerous monasteries that attract pilgrims and tourists. When venturing into these sacred spaces, it’s crucial to be mindful of the local customs, including the dress code that reflects the reverence Tibetans have for their religious sites. Understanding and adhering to the appropriate attire not only shows respect for the local culture but also enhances the overall experience of exploring the spiritual heritage of Tibet.

Here are some dress codes while visiting monastery in Tibet that you can follow. Following the dress code will prevent you from offending the monks and the Tibetan people who wants visitors to pay respect to their cultural values, norms and sentiments while being in their land.

  1. Dress modestly: While visiting the monasteries, temple and other religious sites in Tibet you should dress modestly. Wear attire that covers your shoulder, knee, and don’t expose your body in lubricious way. As a woman if you are wearing dress make sure it is longer than your knee. Don’t wear shorts and half T-shirts while entering monasteries.
  2. Take off hats and sunglasses, when entering monasteries, you should take off the hats and sunglasses, it symbolizes paying respect to the religious values.
  3. Shoes regulations: While entering specific sites inside monasteries and other religious sites, if necessary, take off your shoes. Entering such sacred place with shoes can be prohibited.
  4. Flashy Accessories: Don’t wear flashy and colorful accessories like lockets, head bands, bandana, rings etc. Wearing these flashy accessories is regarded as disrespectful as monasteries and religious sites expects its visitors to be dress modestly.
  5. Clothing with inappropriate thing printed: Try to avoid wearing clothing on which inappropriate words may it be political or social written on it.
