The teal-coloured lake, sitting with the backdrop of snowcapped mountains has been a tourist magnet attracting locals as well as foreigners from all around the globe. For Hindus, it is considered Kak Bhusundi Lake and has very interesting mythology related to Ramayana and Lord Shiva. As for Buddhists and inhabitants of the region, it is said to be mentioned in various Buddhist scriptures and considered a sacred site.
However, the lake is biologically inactive. Because it is located at a high elevation, due to less oxygen concentration and freezing temperatures, there is no aquatic life in Tilicho Lake which makes it an oligotrophic glacial lake.
Thorung La also known as Thorang La Pass is one of the highest mountain passes in the world. With a staggering elevation of 5416 meters or 17769 feet, walking through Thorang La pass is equivalent to scaling low-altitude mountains of Europe, South North America, and Africa. It is a feat in itself, to get there. Thorung La Pass is a high mountain pass that marks the path that connects two “Districts Behind Mountains; Manang and Mustang”.
These two valleys lie on either side of Annapurna Range and Thorang La pass is the point where you can get from one valley to another. Most of the ascent to Thorung La Pass is done from Manang Valley. To be more specific, Thorung Phedi. Early morning hike from Thorung Phedi, an arduous steep hike gaining more than 1000 meters/3,280 ft of elevation will get you to Thorung La pass. Thorung La pass is guarded by two massive peaks Khotung Kond and Yakawakang on south and north respectively. While ascending from Thorung Phedi you will get to see Chola West, Putrun, and other beautiful mountain peaks. While ascending to Muktinath and Mustang you will get to see the mighty Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, and other adjacent mountains.
All in all, Thorung La Pass is a geographical landmark so revered and trekked by adventurers that everyone who has trekked through it will never cease to praise the beauty and adventure it provides. While doing Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake, Thorung La pass is the highest elevation that our trek will take us to and is indubitably one of the major highlights of the entire trek.
Manang and Mustang are both termed as Districts Behind the Mountains. Manang lies North of the massive Annapurna massif, and Mustang lies east of the Dhaulagiri massif and west of Annapurna because both Manang and Mustang are enveloped by mountain ranges on all sides they are called “Districts behind the Mountain”.
Manang
Manang is a small town situated behind the Annapurna massif. Situated at an elevation of 3,519 meters/11,545 ft is a scenic village alongside the Marshyangdi River. From Manang, you will get a breathtaking view of the mountain peaks of Annapurna Massif. Manang is mostly comprised of dry and arid lands, because Manang is situated on the Leeward side of Annapurna massif, water clouds couldn’t travel to Manang which is the reason for less rainfall in the region.
Manang is mostly inhabited by Gurung, Tamang, Ghaley, and other ethnicity. People of Manang also called Manangis’ were during ancient times traders, who used to trade goods from Nepal to Tibet and vice versa. Due to that, the culture, tradition, and religion are heavily influenced by Tibetan culture. Most of the people follow Buddhism as their religion. Since the last decade, Manang has seen radical changes in the infrastructure development sector. The Annapurna Circuit Trek goes through Manang, and because of this commercial establishments throughout the trail can be seen. Manang also has been now connected to a road network, making the life of its inhabitants easier. Thorang La Pass, which is the apogee of the Annapurna Circuit Trek is ascended by the trail that passes through Manang.
Manang is a hidden treasure, which has been alluring local as well as foreign tourists from all around the globe. With its rich cultural background and countless blessings of nature, it is a major attraction and landmark that no one should miss visiting.
Mustang
Mustang lies at a lower elevation than Manang. The major river system of Mustang is the Kaligandaki River. From Mustang you can get a mesmerizing view of Annapurna massif and Dhaulagiri. Just like Manang, it is also situated on the leeward side of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges because of that it also does not receive enough rainfall to sustain farming. The upper region of the Mustang also known as Upper Mustang is a dry mountainous desert that connects Nepal to China. In ancient times, traders used to transport goods using this route from and to Tibet. Similarly, there are many landmarks like Lo Manthang, Jomsom, and Kagbeni to name a few, which are renowned for their cultural and natural aspects. Muktinath is a sacred temple for both Hindus and Buddhists, many people make pilgrimage tours to Muktinath every year.
The major inhabitants of the region are Thakali and Gurungs. Just like in Manang, the culture and traditions of people inhabiting Mustang are heavily influenced by Tibetan culture. Mustang is slightly more economically active than Manang. The Annapurna Circuit Trail gets to Mustang from Manang via Thorang la pass, and then further passes to the lower elevation region of Mustang. Because of countless natural wonders, and culturally and religiously significant landmarks, Mustang has been a dream location for adventure trekkers, bikers, and devotees.
Conclusively, Mustang exploration in itself is an expedition that will take you to the region with the southern border of Nepal to China, offering an unparalleled exploration of its natural wonders and cultural enigma. It is a must-visit place for anyone inside or outside of Nepal.
Muktinath is a sacred temple situated at Mustang Valley. It is considered one of the world’s highest temples standing at an elevation of 3800 meters. Muktinath is a religious monument worshipped by both Hindus and Buddhists. It is considered as 106th Divya Desam and considered sacred by the Sri Vaisnava Hindu sect. In the Kali Gandaki River which flows aside from the Muktinath temple, we can find the “Shaligram” or the Ammonite fossil, which is regarded as a non-anthropomorphic form of Vishnu. Buddhists call Muktinath Chumig Gyatsa, which is a special place for Dakini sky dancers and has its own fascinating mythology.
With its religious significance tied to both Hindu and Buddhist religions, Muktinath temple receives thousands of tourists from all over the world. Recently, it was visited by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which reflects its popularity and religious significance.
