The first part of the ride is from Kathmandu to Besisahar. The distance from Kathmandu to Besi Sahar is about 182km or 113.7 miles and will take 6-7 hours to reach. You will pass through several small towns and settlement areas, beginning from Nagdhunga, Naubise, Galchhi, Malekhu, Kurintar, Mugling, and Aabu Khaireni and finally reaching Dumre Bazar. From Dumre Bazar you will leave Prithivi highway and pass through Purkot, Chok Chisapani, Bhoteodar, and Udipur ultimately reaching Besisahar. These small towns are economic hubs with shops, business establishments, and administrative offices. There will be some stops for lunch and urination during our highway journey. Throughout the way, you will get beautiful views of surrounding hills, landscapes, rivers, and farmlands.
The second part of the drive will take you from Besisahar to Dharapani. It is a 45.6 km drive, for which you will have to change the vehicle. You will get off the bus and share a jeep which will take you to Dharapani, the starting point of the trek in approximately 2-3 hours.
At Dharapani you will be checked in at a lodge where you will spend the night.
Overnight at Lodge in Dharapani.
The trek is a scenic bliss, passing through the valley intricately carved by relentless weathering of the Marshyangdi river, with omnipresent greenery and magnificent sighting of the mountain peaks of Manaslu and Annapurna massif.
After breakfast, you will leave Dharapani for Chame, the district headquarters of Manang. There will be some sections with steep climbs, twists and turns, and some small descents. While gaining elevation we will pass through the forest with pine, fir, oak, maple, and rhododendron along the Marsyangdi River. The first prominent ascent starts from Danakyu to Timang through a vegetatively dense area. As we climb over these lush and serene forests, we will be welcomed by the sublime view of Manaslu and Annapurna Massif. From Timang the trail is mostly lateral with small ascents, descents, and stream crossings till Chame.
After reaching Chame you will crash at the lodge to get a good night’s sleep.
Overnight at Lodge in Chame.
The trek today will take you from Chame to Pisang. The trek is an easy day hike stretching almost 14 km, which usually takes 5-6 hours to complete.
The trail passes through Thaleku, Bhartamg, and Dhikur Pokhari before finally reaching Upper Pisang, the checkpoint of the day. After crossing Thaleku there is a landslide prone section where we have to be extra cautious. The elevation gain is gradual and steady and there is no section comprising a ghastly steep climb. The Annapurna Circuit Trek trail goes through a steep and narrow valley providing a beautiful view of a large rock wall – the Paungda Danda Rock a sacred rock revered by the local people. The Paungda Danda is a rock hill, not rocky but a hill made up of a rock slab rising 1500m from the Marshyandi River, the impressive and grand geographical landmark stupefies every visitor with its grandeur.
The trail then takes us to the Manang Valley floor; The Upper Pisang village, wherein we will spend our night. Closer to the final destination, the tracks become treacherous and more adventurous. The artless beauty of Pisang lies in its pristine villages and localities, monasteries, and warm and welcoming people.
Overnight at Lodge in Pisang.
The trek today takes trekkers to the bucolic Manang village, the village beyond the Himalayas. Despite covering a distance of 16km, the hike is quite easy which can be ascribed to steady elevation gain of just 250 meters or 820 feet.
After breakfast, you will start your trek which will after an ascent get you to Ghyaru, from where we can seize a spectacular view of the north face of Annapurna II, III, IV, Gangapurna, Tilicho, and Pisang peaks.
The trail from Ghyaru stretches laterally along the hillside to Ngwal. As the trail now is gaining elevation, the atmosphere starts becoming cold, and dry. From Ngwal the trail further passes through local villages where Tibetan influence is prominent in their culture and tradition. Trekkers will also get an opportunity to observe a unique blend of Tibetan/Buddhist culture and the long-withstanding beliefs of locals. You’ll also notice that the trail is dotted with shrines, temples, Gompas, and Monasteries to Manang. The trail lastly passes through Braka (Braga), yet another beautiful village, before reaching Manang.
The beautiful Manang village is situated at the side of the culmination point of Khangsar Khola and Thorung Khola. The timeless beauty of Manang welcomes every visitor with its arms wide open. The architecture, environment, and whole aura of the village are heartwarming for all the outsiders. The welcoming people of Manang are ever so accommodating and amiable.

It’s very important to get acclimatized on high-altitude treks. To prevent altitude sickness, we need our body to adapt to a rarefied atmosphere and improve oxygen utilization. This acclimatization day in Manang will address this issue and prepare us for the tough climb ahead.
So, we stay in Manang on this day. However, the day schedule will be full of exploration and activities. In the morning, we will visit Gangapurna & Ice Lakes, and spend the day relaxing soaking in the superb views of Annapurna III, Tilicho, Pisang, and Chulu Peaks.
In the afternoon, we can also visit the Himalayan Rescue Association in Vraja village, wherein we will be briefed about acute mountain sickness, its symptoms, and prevention.
Overnight at Lodge in Manang.
After a day of exploring Manang, and acclimatizing to the higher elevation, letting our bodies get used to the rarefied atmosphere, we trek to Yak Kharka. The trail stretches along the dry and barren landscapes above Manang.
Nearby Manang is a point where Khangsar Khola and Thorung Khola merge to give birth to the Marshyangdi River. The trail deviates right from this coalescing point following the Thorung Khola to Yak Kharka. The trail ascends from Manang initially passing through Tengi and then reaching Ghusang (Locally known as Gunsang). Then further extends laterally along the hillside it crosses the Ghyanchang stream. After passing some small tea houses and man walls trekkers will reach Yak Kharka.
“Kharka” translates to pastures, and Yak Kharka means Yak pastures. As people dwelling in this high elevation heavily depend upon cattle like Yak and Sheep for their survival, Yak Kharka is a place with significant importance acting as a grazing ground for Yaks and assisting in human sustenance. Along the way, trekkers will be on constant surveillance of the eastern peaks of Annapurna Massif. Annapurna II, III, IV, and Gangapurna Himal reveal themselves more and more as you gain elevation and approach Yak Kharka.
At Yak Kharka you will be checked in at a lodge where you will get reinvigorating sleep, and recharge your body for the next day’s trek.
Overnight at Lodge in Yak Kharka.
The trek today will take you to the base of Thorung La pass, Thorung Phedi. After which the most strenuous hike of the whole trek will start. The hike from Yak Kharka to Thorung Phedi might not observe significant elevation gain but due to the rarefied atmosphere, it sure is going to be quite harder than the earlier day’s hike.
Right after you leave Yak Kharka you will cautiously hike through landslide prone area, then after stopping by the ACAP office where they will check your documents you will reach Ledar. The trail now stretches along the Kone Khola stream, it crosses the stream via a suspension bridge and finally reaches Thorung Phedi.
You will pass through slender, narrow graveled paths prone to landslides. The uninhabited, rugged terrain is ethereal and is much different than the lush lowlands that we started on our way up in the course of the preliminary segment of the trek. As the trail is way higher than the tree line altitude there will be no vegetation. If you are traveling during spring there might be pastures however during the fall season it is mostly dry. The atmosphere is also dry and humidity is very low. The bucolic beauty of the region you will witness during the trek surpasses the ability of language to describe things.
Trekkers will finish the day trek pretty early, and they will have plenty of time during the evening. We suggest you get a good rest and prepare yourself for the next day’s strenuous climb. You will be checked in at a lodge in Thorung Phedi. You abode for the night.
Overnight at Thorung Phedi.
Today’s hike is the most challenging hike of the entire Trek. Taking you from Thorong Phedi (4,525m/14,845ft) to Muktinath Temple (3,760m/12,335ft) via Thorong-La pass at 5,416 meters or 17,769 feet. The section of the trek is quite strenuous as Thorong-La Pass is one of the highest passes in the world. It is also the highest point we will be reaching during the entirety of the trek.
The hike begins in the early hours of the morning with a tortuous and steep climb to Thorung High Camp. Further moving ahead, you will follow the dry, rocky, and dusty trail through hill ridges finally reaching the Thorung La Pass. Since the elevation gain is significant, your ascent will be quite strenuous. However, the breathtaking panoramic view from the pass justifies the exacting climb. While approaching the pass you can observe the northern peaks of the Annapurna Range and the western face of the Chulu Range, while on descending the western side of the pass you can observe the northern peaks of the Dhaulagiri range. Just crossing the Thorang La pass is a life achievement, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The triumphant feeling you get after reaching one of the highest passes in the world is indescribable.
After spending some time at Thorung La pass you will descend slowly. The trail widens over a barren hillside as it descends to Muktimath – a sacred location for Hindus and Buddhists. At Muktinath, you will be checked in at a lodge where you will spend the night.
Overnight at Lodge in Muktinath.
Today is a drive day, a rest day for your legs. Just give yourself a pat on the back for completing the arduous climb and crossing Thorung La pass. The drive will take you from Muktinath to Tatopani.
The drive starts from Muktinath. You will share the vehicle with other travelers. The road first descends to Kagbeni, takes a left turn, and heads towards Tatopani. The road passes through a beautiful valley carved by the relentless weathering of the Kaligandaki river. During the road trip, you will also get to see the bucolic beauty of villages like Marpha, Chokho Pani, Naurikot, and many more. Some sections of the road to Tatopani are either asphalt or tarmac-pitched road where as some sections can be graveled or off-road. As the follows the current of Kalagandaki River, the greenery on the landscapes is reinstated aggrandizing the charm of the whole road trip. Your vehicle will cross several streams and waterfalls before reaching Taatopani. The road will traverse through Larjung, Kalopani, Taal Bajar, and Ghasa before finally reaching Tatopani.
“Tatopani” translates to “Hot water” in English and the reason behind such naming is the presence of hot springs in that area. You can take a quick dip in the hot springs present in Tatopani and stretch your body previously congested in the tight space of a jeep/bus seat. You will be checked in at a lodge at Tatopani.
Overnight at a lodge at Tatopani.
Today’s hike is yet another strenuous day of hiking. It is hard because of its seemingly unending length and daunting elevation gain of 1,600 meters or 5,249 feet in a day. It will take trekkers from Tatopani to Ghorepani along some beautiful villages, lush forests, and beautiful hill ridges.
The trail starts with an ascent to Shikha village, and like the initial part of the trek, the trail observes continuous elevation gain till Ghorepani. While traversing through Shikha trekkers will pass through pristine Gurung villages, allowing you a chance to witness the culture and daily life of natives. Trekkers will follow the trail cloaked with lush forest predominantly populated with Rhododendron species, Maple, and Oak from Shikha, to Chitre and Ghorepani. Trekkers will cross several small streams, pastures, and terrace farmlands. The trail will have many short as well as long ascents till Ghorepani.
