Champadevi Hill is located on the southern hill ridge of Kathmandu. North of the Champadevi Hill is Kathmandu Valley and south of it are even more rugged hills with villages and settlement areas on its crevasse.

Distance and Length of the Champadevi Hiking Trail

The length of the Champadevi Hiking Trail is approximately 7.5 km or 4.67 miles to the top of Champadevi Hill. The round trip will be 15 km or 9.34 miles. The majority trail passes through a mix of pine forest and temperate coniferous forest. The trailhead, Bansbari Village, is approximately 16 km far from Thamel and it will take approximately 45 minutes from your hotel to reach the trailhead by car. 

Champadevi Hike Duration

Champadevi Hike can be completed within 4-5 hours. The ascend or first half of the hike to Champadevi Hill will take almost 2.5-3 hours. After a break of 30-45 minutes at the top, the descending hike will begin. The descending hike will be completed in 1.5 hours. 

The hike duration will largely depend upon the hikers themselves.

Champadevi Hill Height

Champadevi Hill is elevated 2,285 meters or 7,496 feet above sea level. The trailhead is at an elevation of 1500 meters, which means the hikers will observe a net elevation of almost 800 meters. Some of the beginning and end sections of the hike are the steepest part of the hike. The middle section of the trail isn’t steep and easy to walk on. The steep sections at the beginning and end are stone-paved, so with some hydration and rest breaks you can easily do this hike. 

The Champadevi Shrine

At the top of the Champadevi Hill is the Champadevi shrine. Champadevi is a local deity who protects the villagers settled around the hill. On the first day of the new year, hundreds of people make a pilgrimage hike to the Champadevi Shrine to get blessings for the new year. Every year before the monsoon starts locals make a pilgrimage tour to worship Champadevi for rain.
