Major Attractions. What to Expect from Gokyo Lakes EBC Heli Trek?

Chola Pass and Gokyo Ri

Cho La Pass is a scintillating mountain pass that separates Khumbu Valley from Gokyo Valley and is elevated 5,420 meters or 17,782 feet above sea level. The view of Ama Dablam, Cholatse, and the nearby landscape is truly mesmerizing. The exhilarating adventure of scaling this pass is incomparable. Especially the last 200 meters or 656 feet of ascend is very steep and requires careful attention from climbers, and specialized gear such as micro crampons.

Gokyo Ri a hilltop in Gokyo Valley is the best place to spot Everest from Gokyo Valley. Gokyo Ri is a beautiful vantage point that provides trekkers with an opportunity to spot 4 Eight-thousanders; Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Yu, and many other prominent peaks of Everest regions like Tobuche, Cholatse, Thamaserku, KangChung etc. In addition to mountain vista Gokyo Ri also allows trekkers to observe Ngozumpa Glacier, 2 of the six Gokyo Lakes, and Gokyo village. The climb to Gokyo Ri from Gokyo village is a 500-meter ascend, usually done before dawn to witness beautiful sunshine over the mountain peaks.

Gokyo Lakes

Gokyo Lakes is the highest-altitude freshwater lake system on the planet situated at an altitude between 4700-5000m or 15419-16404ft. Some of the prominent ones are Gokyo Cho or Dudh Pokhari, Thonak Cho, Tanjung Cho, Ngojum Cho, and Gyazompa Cho. These glacier-fed oligotrophic lakes provide a peaceful and serene ambiance to everyone traveling to Gokyo Valley. These lakes are cherished not only for visual aesthetics but also for the religious significance they hold for Buddhists and Hindus. Every year during Janai Purnima (a Nepalese festival) people make a pilgrimage to Gokyo Cho or Dudh Pokhari. The view nearby mountain peak being reflected on the pristine blue Gokyo Lake is to die for.

Ngozumpa Glacier and Khumbu Glacier

Ngozumpa Glacier is the largest glacier in Nepal. It is situated in Gokyo Valley and its tributaries originate from Cho Yu and Gyachung peaks and stretch 36 km down the Gokyo Valley. Ngozumpa Glacier like many glaciers is a humongous body of slow-moving ice rivers, this glacier has had a tremendous contribution to shaping the valleys found in in Everest region. It gives rise to the Dudh Koshi River which has played a vital role in promoting biodiversity and sustaining life in the lower regions of Everest. The glaciers and debris it carries with it are so large that you can walk on them and not know that you are walking over a glacier. The glacier has accentuated the beauty of Gokyo Valley, creating glacial lakes and picturesque landscapes in this part of the Everest region.

Khumbu Glacier is the glacier originating from the highest elevation in the world. It originates from the Everest cwm (which means bowl-shaped valley) and stretches all the way to Lobuche. It is a feeding source of water for Imja Khola which later coalesces with Dudh Koshi river. The Khumbu glacier likewise has played a major role in carving the Khumbu valley and making a geographical marvel out of granite rocks found in the fold mountains of the Himalayas. The glacier is humongous and majestic, the sheer size and volume of the ice beneath the debris is just something incomprehensible to untrained eyes. Khumbu Glacier undoubtedly is a major attraction of Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp Heli Trek.

Namche Bazar

Namche Bazar, also known as the gateway to Everest, is a picturesque sherpa settlement found in the remote Khumbu region. Though very far from densely populated cities, Namche Bazar is a sophisticated village where trekkers and mountaineers can find and buy all the necessary goods for trekking and expeditions. In the past few decades, Namche Bazar has morphed from a remote settlement to a well-facilitated tourist hub, but it hasn’t lost its essence and bucolic charm.  Its dusty paths have been improved from stone paved ones and small huts to multistoried homes that still adhere to architectural design native to the Khumbu region. It is the last luxurious stop before a trekker further pierces in the Everest region. The markets of Namche Bazar are well stocked with essential trekking gear in case you have forgotten to purchase anything while in Kathmandu, not only branded but locally manufactured apparel can also be bought here.

It is Namche Bazar which will gift trekkers and mountaineers with first glimpses of Mt. Everest. There are luxurious hotels, lodges, and restaurants that serve local and international cuisines as well. In addition, museums, stupas, monasteries, and shrines found in Namche Bazar will help you enlighten with the history, culture, tradition, and lifestyle of the community contently living in this remote part of Khumbu.

The most important aspect of Namche Bazar is, that this boisterous town sitting on the lap of the Himalayas sets the mood for trekkers and mountaineers to take on the challenge of trekking in the Everest region or any sort of demanding mountain expedition, it invigorates them and oust any kind of hesitation, doubts and fear they might have. This lively and happening Sherpa town introduces trekkers and mountaineers with challenges, obstacles, hindrances, problems and difficulties, solutions, rewards, adventure, thrill, and courage simultaneously. It’s not just a place with houses, hotels, lodges, and restaurants but it’s an atmosphere, a different world that bolsters the dreams and determination of adventurers and thrill seekers to explore the Khumbu region.

Kalapatthar and Everest Base Camp

Kalapatthar. Everyone must have seen an iconic picture of Everest, one with three peaks in which Everest is gallantly standing behind those two peaks; tall and proud. Well, that picture was taken from Kalapatthar and that is just a cropped frame of 360o majestic view one can see from Kalapatthar. It is the highest point that trekkers will trek while doing Everest High Pass Trek and it is elevated 5,555 meters or 18,225 feet from sea level. Kalapatthar summit is a 2-hour hike from Gorakshep and it rewards trekkers with the best view of Mt. Everest one can ever get and other peaks like Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Cholatse, Pumori, and many more. (If we start enlisting peaks higher than 6,000 meters or 19,865 feet above sea level then this whole thing will be filled with mountain names.) In addition to that one can witness almost all of the Khumbu Glacier. Summiting Kalapatthar is almost similar to scaling a small mountain often found in the Alps, Andes, and Rocky Mountain ranges.

Everest Base Camp is yet another adventurer’s paradise. Why shouldn’t it be? It is the base of the tallest peak on the planet. The place from where arduous stretch through icefall, glaciers, crevasses, and steep sections begins. Well, trying hard to not re-iterate it, but it is an amazing place to be for hardcore adventurers and thrill seekers often ranking high on their bucket lists. At EBC one can witness Khumbu ice fall, spot amazing landscapes, get a sneak peek of the geography of the bowl-shaped valley surrounded by Lhotse, Everest, and Nuptse, also get a chance to converse with mountaineers who are about to embark on their expedition.

Mountain Flights

Trekkers will get two kinds of flight experience on this trek. One will be done in a small airplane and another in a helicopter. As the name of the trek package suggests one of the major highlights of the trek is a helicopter flight that will take trekkers out deep from the Khumbu region and to Kathmandu. But even before the helicopter flight, trekkers will get to the Khumbu region by Airplane flight, from either Ramechhap or Kathmandu.

The trans-Himalayan flight to Lukla takes off from Kathmandu. The thing about this flight is that it’s not a regular flight, it’s a flight that allows its passengers to get magnificent views of the Langtang Range, Gaurishankar Range, Makalu Range, and Everest Range. The views of the mountains are just indescribable. The snow-capped peaks pierce white gossamer clouds and display their ethereal beauty to spectators on board.

The touchdown at Lukla is a different adventure. Tenzing Hillary Airport is one of the most difficult airports to land an aircraft on, and that is why no newbie pilot is permitted on the Kathmandu-Lukla flight. The aircraft dives headfirst from the hill opposite Lukla before lifting for the touchdown at Tenzing Hillary Airport. Your adventurous trek begins with a thrilling and almost acrobatic landing performed by pilots who have mastered the Himalayan skies with their aircraft.

The Helicopter flight starts from Gorakshep, where your trek concludes. A chartered helicopter will get there at Gorakshep to pick you up. As Helicopter starts to fly in Khumbu skies, you will be bestowed magnificent views of mountains, landscapes, and everything Khumbu has to offer to its visitors.

There are simply too many things, too many attractions of the Everest Region, that if we mentioned it all will make this TLDR. But be assured that Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes Heli Tour offer more than what you have desired.

Culture, Tradition, and Lifestyle of Sherpa People | Monastery and Museums

Sherpa people mostly inhabiting higher altitude areas of Nepal are often considered to be the toughest people on the planet. In places with rarefied atmospheres, where people struggle to even breathe, they hike up and down carrying luggage/baggage weighing more than 200 lbs. While on Everest Luxury Trek you will get to observe the fascinating culture, tradition, and lifestyle of the Sherpa people, who thrive in these harsh living conditions. Their belief and values heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhism is one spectacle to witness. Their unique culture and tradition are no less captivating. The monastery and museums that you will visit will tell you tales of bravery, simplicity, persistence, and belief of the Sherpa people. As you traverse through settlement areas like Namche Bazar displaying the artless beauty and simplicity of the culture, tradition, and lifestyle, you will get to observe and explore the cultural enigma obscured from the modern world.

Best Time to Do Gokyo Lakes with Everest Base Camp Heli Trek.

Though the trek can be done all over the year as per trekkers’ choice, the weather climate and weather might make it onerous and risky. So, it should not be neglected if you want to have the best experience, adventure, and exploration.

The best time for Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp Heli Trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these seasons the weather is favourable with clear blue skies providing the most spectacular mountain panorama. In spring the temperature ranges from 20 degrees in the daytime and falls to 5 degrees at night.

June to August is the time when the monsoon hits Nepal and there will be chances of domestic flight cancelation and roadblocks due to landslides, but some trekkers still prefer to trek in the monsoon too. This time will be the off-season for trekking so lodges along the trails and the trail itself will be less crowded which some may prefer that way. The probability of cancellation of Helicopter flight and usual flight is also very high, as the visibility is severely compromised by clouds and fog in the mountains. This time of the year is inauspicious for Gokyo Lakes and EBC Heli Trek.

September to November is Autumn. As Autumn initiates precipitation begins to lessen and halts eventually, and the climate and temperature get milder. It is also an ideal time to do Gokyo Lakes and EBC Heli Trek and is the peak of the trekking season. The skies are clearer providing a clear mesmerizing view of surrounding landscapes and mountain panorama. As autumn approaches its terminal ending it starts to get colder and colder.

December to February is winter, the time when it starts to snow. Winter trek crossing Three Passes is also a perilous yet adventurous hiking experience and as the mist settles down you will get the most beautiful mountain views. In winter, lodges will have few guests, and trails less crowded.

What will be the temperature during the trek?

Temperature varies from month to month during Gokyo Lake and Everest Base Camp Heli trek which are:

  • March to May is the best month to trek with temperatures between 8 to 0 °C at high elevations.
  • June to August is the summer so the temperature will be warm. Besides it’s also the monsoon season so you need to be careful with wet and muddy trails. During the day it will be 10 to 23°C and nights will be 5°C to 10°C.
  • September to November is yet another best time to hike with temperatures at 20°C in high altitudes during the day with nights being colder around 5°C.
  • From December to February, daytime temperature can get as low as -10 °C at high altitudes.

Safety and Insurance for Trekkers.

While operating challenging high-altitude treks our first and foremost priority is Trekkers’ safety and we at Breakfree Adventures put the safety of our clients even before anything.

Our guides and potters are cognizant of the challenges and adversities of the Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp Heli Trek Trail. Our guides and potters are well trained and tutored with proceedings to follow in case of any inauspicious happenings during the trail. Our guides will be measuring the blood oxygen level of the trekkers with an oximeter regularly to detect early signs of altitude sickness. Also, there will be acclimatization days which obviate the chances of altitude sickness by allowing the body to adapt to a rarefied atmosphere. In addition to that locals are very hospitable and friendly, and cases of assault, robbery, and stealing on the trail are unheard of. We request our clients to not offend the culture, religion, and lifestyle of natives to avoid confrontation. Sure, this is a perilous trek but we take no chances on our client’s safety until it’s all green light and no one is crossing the road. So, the Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp Heli Trek is as safe as it could get.

Insurance is mandatory for anyone doing high altitude trek. In case of emergency, insurance covers the cost of evacuation via helicopter and it’s better to be safe than sorry. We Breakfree Adventures can help trekkers choose the ideal insurance for Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp Heli Trek.

Guides and Potters during the trek.

Nepal Tourism Board has made it mandatory for trekkers to have a licensed guide with them throughout the trek while doing high-risk strenuous trek, which also includes every trek done in the Khumbu region. However, hiring a potter is a personal choice. Our standard Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp Heli Trek provides Potter service but if you are okay carrying your stuff then you don’t need to hire a potter and it will also reduce the cost of the trek. Our guides all have comprehensive knowledge of the trail and are very apt with communication skills that can understand the needs and issues of even the most reticent person. They are familiar with all the subtleties and nuances of the trial and are prudent when it comes to facing such difficult situations.

Similarly, our potters, simply put, are superhumans. Even we cannot fathom their resilience, strength, and stamina. In places where a person needs to pant every few steps, our potters can carry your goods and reach your destination faster than any trekkers. They are just indefatigable physically and mentally. However, if you consider yourself strong enough to carry your bag then you are more than welcome.

Breakfree Adventures provides both experienced guides and indefatigable potters with standard Gokyo Lakes and EBC heli Trek packages.

Acclimatization and Altitude Sickness during the trek

Acclimatization while doing challenging and strenuous treks like Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp Heli Trek is very important. Not allowing your body to acclimatize itself to a low oxygen content atmosphere can cause altitude sickness, even to experienced trekkers. Altitude gains as high as 5,000 meters or 16,404 feet require critical attention.

But our itinerary is carefully planned and consists of two deliberately segregated acclimatization days, one at Namche Bazar and one at Gokyo Ri, to prevent our trekkers from getting altitude sickness. The trick is to walk slowly and steadily, drink plenty of water (Don’t let yourself dehydrate), avoid alcoholic drinks or too much salty food, and follow your trek guide’s instructions. Don’t walk too fast thinking you are fit enough as it may result in getting AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) you are hiking at the world’s highest locations where the oxygen level is very low, so you will easily get tired and dehydrated resulting in chances of suffering with Altitude Sickness.

Altitude illness in high mountain journeys is a prevalent issue, however, it is preventable and wishes instantaneous remedy. However, if you act nonchalantly about symptoms of altitude sickness, it can get severe even lethal.

Mountain sickness often starts from an elevation of 3,500m/11,482ft. Our trekking leaders and guides are properly experienced and use oximeters to monitor your oxygen degree for early detection of altitude illness.

Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp Heli Trek Difficulty

Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp Trek is a challenging trek done in the Everest region. The trail takes trekkers off the beaten path of the Everest region to Gokyo Valley. While following the trail trekkers will traverse through the lush forest of Sagarmatha National Park to dry and arid regions of Gokyo, Thagnak, Lobuche, and Gorakshep. Trekkers will have to cross Cho La pass which is one of the highest altitude passes on the planet separating Khumbu Valley with Gokyo Valley. The ascend and descend to and from Chola Pass consists of sections that are very precarious, steep, and dangerous, which requires utmost caution from trekkers. The higher elevation means that the chances of trekkers getting altitude sickness are high. Also, there are sections on the trail that are precarious and risky to walk nonchalantly. Also, there are some days when trekkers will have to cover huge distances and elevations which is simply exhausting and exacting on the body.
