Gokyo Lakes Trek vs Everest Base Camp Trek.

Gokyo Lakes Trek or Everest Base Camp Trek? This could be a major question to a trekker, thinking of traveling to Khumbu Region. Fair enough, this question is indeed an expected one. Though these two treks have many things in common there are some things that one provides which others don’t.

In simple words, Everest Base Camp Trek will take you through villages and settlement areas starting from Lukla. From Lukla, you will hike to Phakding, then to Namche Bazar. From Namche Bazar, we will ascend to Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche ultimately to Gorakshep. As we traverse through these localities mostly inhabited by Sherpa people, we will get the opportunity to witness their culture, lifestyle, and tradition. We will come across monasteries, and shrines adorned with colorful prayer flags and wheels. From Gorakshep, we will trek to Everest Base Camp along Khumbu Glacier and the next day to Kalapatthar, from where you can see the highest Mountain on planet Earth Mt. Everest, and other mountains such as Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, etc. Then we will retrace our steps to Lukla in a previously stepped trail.

In contrast to Everest Base Camp Trek, Gokyo Lake Trek as its name suggests takes you to Gokyo Valley. From Namche Bazar we leave for Dole, then to Machhermo both beautiful Sherpa Village. From Machhermo we will leave for Gokyo Valley. On our way to Gokyo Valley, we will be detained by the arresting sight of Ngozumpo glacier, where the DudhKoshi river originates. On Gokyo Valley, we will explore Gokyo Lakes and summit Gokyo Ri. From Gokyo Ri, a trekker can see Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Gokyo, Makalu, Tobuche, Cholatse, and other surrounding peaks. After exploration of Gokyo Valley, we retrace our steps to Namche Bazar and then to Lukla. Gokyo Lakes Trekking will allow you to explore covert parts of the Khumbu region and allow you to explore the unexplored and pristine Gokyo Valley.

In summary, both treks have their unique offerings that others might not provide. The Gokyo Lake Trek will take trekker to Gokyo Valley while the Everest Base Camp Trek will take a trekker to Khumbu Valley, because of this mountain views and geographical exploration can vary vastly but the cultural beauty that trekker will witness will remain almost similar. Gokyo Lakes Trek provides trekkers a golden opportunity to witness pristine Gokyo Lake, an amazing glacier, and a hidden valley adjoining the Khumbu Valley to the west. If your goal is to reach Everest Base Camp, explore Khumbu Valley, and observe the natural beauty it offers then Everest Base Camp Trek could be for you. It is up to trekkers to decide what they want to be mesmerized by, the beauty of Gokyo Valley or the adventure of Everest Base Camp.

Essential Information of Gokyo Lake Trekking

How hard is the Gokyo Lakes Trek?

Gokyo Lakes Trek is categorized as a strenuous trek. The hike is physically demanding which requires trekkers to be physically as well as mentally prepared. We suggest you regularly go jogging and exercise for about 2-3 months before your trek date to build up your stamina if you are not physically active and fit. Walking stairs up and down is also helpful since the hike involves ascending and descending high mountain trails through stone-paved paths.

No previous trekking experience is required to accomplish the trek and even a novice trekker can do it. But if you do have any past trekking experience, it will be helpful and added advantage. Anyone with a normal fitness level can easily go for this trek since there are enough rest/acclimatization days planned.

With normal physical fitness, a positive attitude, self-confidence, and strong determination, trekking to Everest Base Camp is possible. Those with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood disease should be informed ahead of joining the trek.

When is the best time for the Gokyo Lakes trek?

Though the trek can be done around the year as per the choices of trekkers, the weather climate and weather should not be neglected if you want to have the best experience, adventure, and exploration.

The best time to do the Gokyo Lakes Trek is during Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). During these seasons the weather is favorable with clear blue skies providing the most spectacular mountain panorama. In spring the temperature ranges from 20 degrees in the daytime and falls to 5 degrees at night.

June to August is the time when the monsoon hits Nepal and there will be chances of Lukla flight cancelation, but some trekkers still prefer to trek in the monsoon too. This time will be the off-season in Everest so lodges and trails are less crowded which some may prefer that way.

In Autumn(September to November), the weather gets colder but it is also the ideal time to trek to EBC, only you need is warm clothing and good preparedness. As autumn progresses, snowfall makes the EBC trek much tougher. Nights will be much colder.

Winter(December to February) is the time when it starts to snow. Winter trek to EBC is also a different hiking experience and as the mist settles down you will get the most beautiful mountain views. In winter, lodges will have few guests, and trails less crowded.

Gokyo Lakes Trek accommodation

The accommodation facilities are basic but good along with good food during Gokyo Lake Trekking. These lodges are well-maintained and comfortable. Lodges on the trekking trail are often called Tea-houses run by the locals which are clean and have a friendly atmosphere. You will meet lots of trekkers from around the world here.

Most of the rooms on the lodges are on a twin-shared basis i.e. the room has two beds and some basic furniture like a small table or chair. Almost all the tea-houses will provide extra blankets as it will be colder in the mountains.

Toilets on the lower elevations will be western styled but the higher elevations will have squat toilet facilities. Another thing to keep in mind is that most tea houses don’t provide toilet roll paper. So it will be a good idea to carry your toilet roll paper.

Besides the normal local lodges, there are several luxury lodges on the Everest trail that have the best facilities similar to hotels in Kathmandu like attached toilets, free wi-fi, and nice rooms. Yeti Mountain Home or Everest Summit Lodge provide these facilities but they are located at limited locations and don’t go up till the base camp. Trekkers can customize their trek and opt for luxury accommodations. Everest Luxury Trek, Chitwan Luxury Trek, and Nepal Bhutan Luxury Trek are some of the luxurious trips operated by Breakfree Adventure.

Gokyo  Lakes Trek Acclimatization

Acclimatization while doing challenging and strenuous treks like Gokyo Lakes Trek is very important. If you don’t give your body an opportunity to acclimatize itself to low oxygen content atmosphere, avoiding acclimatization can cause altitude sickness even to experienced trekkers. Altitude gains of as plenty as 5,000 meters or 16,404 feet require critical attention.

But our itinerary is carefully planned that prevents our trekkers from getting altitude sickness. The trick is to walk slowly and steadily, drink enough water (Don’t let yourself dehydrate), avoid alcoholic drinks or meat products and follow your trek guide’s advice. Don’t walk too fast thinking you are fit enough as it may result in getting AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) as you are hiking at the world’s highest locations where oxygen level is very low, so you will easily get tired and dehydrated resulting in chances of suffering with Altitude Sickness.

Altitude illness in high mountain journeys is a common issue, however it is preventable and wishes instantaneous remedy. However, if you forget about symptoms of altitude sickness, it can get severe.

Mountain sickness often starts from an elevation of 3,500m/11,482ft. Our trekking leaders and guides are properly-experienced and use oximeters to monitor your oxygen degree for early detection of altitude illness.
