Bhutan in an attempt to preserve its culture and nature had secluded itself from the outer world for the majority of 20th century. It was only on 1974, Bhutan was opened for the tourist to visit. And the attempt was really successful. Bhutan haven’t been spoiled by external influence either culturally and naturally. It is the only country in the world which is carbon negative. The culture, religion and tradition are also unblemished.
Bhutan emphasizes on “High Impact, Low Volume” tourism policy. Due to this, visa acquiring process is also bit complicated and expensive. You have to book a tour with government registered touring company, in order to obtain your visit visa. You will be accompanied by a touring guide throughout the tour so that it will be well regulated. Due to rather complicated visa process and expensive pricing, tours to Bhutan are often overlooked which have resulted it being less visited.

Previously, there was no road connection till Shana, so trekkers would start their hike from Drugyel Dzong. But recently Shana village, the northernmost village of Paro City is connected to national road network, reducing a day off of old itinerary. From Shana, you will start your trek entering Jigme Dorji National Park and penetrate deep through lush forest. The park is home to several endangered species including the takin, snow leopard, blue sheep, tiger, red panda, and the Himalayan black bear. Rather easy day hike as compared to other day hikes done during Jomolhari Circuit Trek. You will ascend along the trail following Paro Chu River. After 4-5 hours or day hike covering the distance of 6.38 miles, you will arrive at Jangothang Camp Site, where you will spend the night and while away your fatigue and tiredness.
Jomolhari Circuit Trek is graded as challenging trek, and we must be cautious regarding elevation gain to avoid acquiring altitude sickness. Trekking at places with elevation more than 3500 meters or 11,482 feet, we should acclimatize our body to rarefied atmosphere. So, today is an acclimatization day, we will explore nearby landmarks and areas. We will hike to and back Jomolhari Base Camp, one of the most beautiful and visually pleasing places to be throughout the entire trek, with mesmerizing view of Jomolhari Mountain, green hills and pastures covered with vivid and colorful wild flowers by the side of small water body. It really feels like Jomolhari Base Camp was stolen and smuggled to Bhutan from Heaven.
As you spend the day exploring nearby areas without gaining elevation, your body will adapt to rarefied atmosphere and start becoming efficient on oxygen utilization. This significantly reduces chances of getting altitude sickness.
Now comes one of the difficult hiking days of entire Jomolhari Trekking. Your trek to Lingzhi will require you to be free of fatigue and tiredness, and great deal of zeal and audacity. After the breakfast you will start following the trail along one of the tributaries of Paro Chu River. You will later cross the stream, taking right you will enter the valley and ascend to Neyley La Pass situated at an elevation of 4,870 meters or 15,977 feet. At Neyley La Pass you will get enchanting view of mountain peaks like Jomolhari and Chomolhari, along with the comprehensive view of whole terrain. From Neyley La Pass you will descend following arid terrain all the way to Lingzhi campsite.
After hiking for 7+ hours you will get to Lingzhi, where you will spend the night and while away your tiredness and fatigue, rejuvenating yourself for the yet another arduous hike of next day.
Yet another day of strenuous day hike. Subsequently, after getting off of revitalizing sleep and having replenishing breakfast you will resume your trekking adventure. You will cross the stream below Lingzhi/Lingshi and start ascending the hill ridge before turning left and traversing laterally. You will move along the trail ascending and descending, piercing the dry and desiccated hills and valleys. A final steep ascend will take you to Laklay La Pass with an elevation of 4860 meters or 15,944 feet. Indifferent to Neyley La Pass, Yaklay La pass also bestows trekkers with ultimate sightseeing opportunities; beautiful mountain vista to the north, green beautiful pastures on left and right and mesmerizing view of entire terrain. You will descend from Yaklay La pass, come across beautiful green pastures and hike along the contributing stream of Thimphu Chu River, finally reaching Shodu Camp Site.
By the end or the day, you would have approximately hiked around 11.9 miles or 19.17 km for more than 7 hours. You will get essential rest and relaxation on Shodu Camp Site to regain the strength and stamina required for next days hike.
Today’s hike will be long but not that exacting. Because you will be losing elevation descending it will be fairly easy. You will hike on the path that stretches laterally on the hillside above Thimphu Chu River. As you lose elevation and approach tree like altitude, you will observe vegetations reappear and greenery all around you. You will be crossing several streams, rushing downwards to coalesce with Thimphu Chu. Waterfalls along the way are also common sightings.
After being on the trail for around 6-7 hours and covering approximately 10.92 miles or 16.56 km you will get to Barshong. It is a remote settlement area situated at Thimphu. You will be spending the night at Barshong Camp Site.
It’s been only few years that Barshong has been connected with national road network. Trekkers previously would further trek to Dolam Kencho then to Thimphu to end the trek. Thanks to newly constructed road network, you will be driven from Barshong to Thimphu, a 40 km drive to capital. The drive through newly built road could be rough, tiring and time consuming.
After getting in Thimphu, you will be checked in at a hotel for your night stay, marking the end of your trek. But there is cultural exploration still to do.
Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, where you will wake up at the morning. From the window of your bedroom, you will get another glance of the city, its street, people and surrounding, a rather different perspective from the previous day tour. Without further ado you will embark on the exploration of the beautiful Bhutan, to be specific, Punakha.

The ideal time to visit Bhutan is spring (March-May) and Autumn/fall (September-November). These are considered to be the best time to visit Bhutan to get the maximum adventure and trouble free experience. Planning your adventure during the winter could be a better idea if you want to avoid the hustle-bustle of the peak season. During the winter Bhutan may see some snow fall. The temperature level goes down (even below freezing point) during some winter days.
