Trip Overview

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a mystical tour in the forbidden land of Tibet. The tour is a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage for pious Hindus, Buddhists, Bon, and Jains, and anyone who wants to explore and witness the faiths of different people converge at the sacred premise of Mount Kailash and Mansarovar.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, one of the oldest pilgrimage tours, is not like any other religious tour but is a mystic journey of spiritual revelation and religious enrichment. The tour,

The Kailash Mansarovar Tour provides pilgrims a providential opportunity to circumambulate the revered Mt. Kailash and visit the holy Mansarovar Lake.

Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake, situated in Ngari Prefecture of Tibet Autonomous Region(TAR) of China, is a rendezvous for people following the Hindu, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon religions.

The Kailash Pilgrimage Tour, also known as the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra or just Kailash Yatra, is one of the most sought-after pilgrim treks in the world. Its significance is highly regarded in all four religions.

The importance of Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake, situated on the highest plateau of the world, Tibet is explicitly mentioned in different religious scriptures, epics, and books of many religions.

Kailash Parikrama | Kailash Kora: Circumambulation of Mount Kailash.

Kailash Parikrama and Kailash Kora are both the same thing which translates to, revolving around Mount Kailash. Parikrama is a Hindi word where as Kora is a Tibetan word, which means to revolve around.

In all four religions revolving around Mount Kailash is considered an act of devotion and is a must-do if your health and physical conditions allow you to.

The path that encircles the Kailash Parvat is around 55 km or 33 miles long and passes through Dolma La Pass elevated 5,630 meters or 18, 471 feet above sea level. The trek around Mount Kailash is a strenuous pursuit.

One will be trekking in elevations 4,670 meters or 15,321 feet above sea level. The thin atmosphere, cold temperature, and rocky and slippery trail make circumambulating Mount Kailash a precarious journey.

Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain people circumambulate Mount Kailash clockwise, keeping Mount Kailash to the righthand side. Bon people revolve Mount Kailash counterclockwise.

Making one whole revolution around Mount Kailash is believed to cleanse and purify one’s soul of sins committed throughout one’s lifetime. Revolving around Mount Kailash is supposed to bring spiritual merit and good fortune to a person.

It is believed that a person circumambulating Mount Kailash 108 times will achieve Nirvana or Moksha.

Full Body Prostation Kailash Kora.

Many Buddhist Pilgrims do the Kailash Kora the hard way. At the beginning of the Kailash Kora, the pilgrims put their palms together, bow down towards Mount Kailash, and then lie prostrate on the ground. While lying prone on the ground, they mark a spot on the ground as far as their fingers extend. After that, they stand up and step forward to the marked spot.

They repeat this step until they circumambulate around Mount Kailash. Revolving around Mount Kailash this way denotes greater devotion towards Mount Kailash.

It takes around 3 weeks to make one revolution this way.

Trip Information

Kailash Mansarovar Pilgrimage Tour and its religious significance.

It is certainly not a coincidence that Hinduism, Buddhism, Jain, and Bon religions consider this specific place on the Globe sacred. There has to be something special about Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake, mysteries awaiting to be unfolded.

Regardless of undiscovered mysteries, each religion has justifications for why Mt. Kailash and Mansarovar Lake are religiously important.

Hinduism on Mt. Kailash and Mansarovar Lake.

The mentions of Kailash Parvat, which translates to Mt. Kailash, in Hindu scriptures, epics, and writings are plentiful. From Ramayana to Vedas, Kailash Parvat is mentioned as a holy mountain where one of the Hindu Trinity resides.

According to Hinduism, Mt. Kailash is an abode of Lord Shiva, the destroyer of all the things that have come to an end.

It is believed that God Shiva still resides in Kailash Parvat with his wife Goddess Parvati, and his sons God Kumar and Ganesh, and he can be found meditating in a Lotus position within the confines of Kailash Parvat.

For Hindu Mystics, spread all over the world, this is an ultimate pilgrimage that brings a person close to God Shiva and all that he stands for.

A short but difficult trek from the northern side of the Kailash Parvat takes pilgrims to Ashtapad, the base of Mt. Kailash, which is considered the holiest place on the planet for Hindus.

Likewise, Mansarovar Lake is considered to have been created out of the consciousness of Lord Brahma, the God of creation.

Embracing the base of the sacred peak and visiting Mansarovar Lake is believed to cleanse and rid a person of the sins they committed.

Buddhism and Bonpo on Mt. Kailash and Mansarovar Lake.

Buddhists consider Mt. Kailash the mythological Mt. Meru which is the stairway to heaven. The Buddhist scriptures and illustrations depict Mt. Kailash as the cosmological center and naval of the universe and all that exists.

Buddhist Mythology also considers Mt. Kailash as the father of the world and Lake Mansarovar as the mother. It is believed that Queen Mayadevi bathed at Mansarovar and cleansed herself for Buddha to enter her womb.

Besides this, the entire region of Mt. Kailash and Mansarovar Lake consists of several sites that are closely related to Padmasambhava.

Jain on Mt. Kailash and Mansarovar Lake.

According to the Jain religion, Mount Kailash is the place where the founder of the religion Rishabhnatha achieved nirvana. Due to this Mount Kailash and the premises hold a significant importance amongst Jain people.

There are several stupas and shrines found around Mount Kailash, that commemorate the spiritual achievement of Rishabhnath.

One of the major shrines can be found near the Ashtapad of Kailash Parvat.

Best Time to Do Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

The quest of being in the vicinity of Lord Shiva’s abode and feeling the unexplainable and mysterious aura of Mount Kailash and Mansarovar requires meticulous planning.

An itinerary prepared carefully after exhaustive research, keeping in mind many influencing factors, guarantees an optimum touring experience and ensures a transformational journey for pilgrims and tourists.

For someone who intends to do Kailash Mansarovar Tour, knowing the best time to embark on this once-in-a-lifetime odyssey is a must. If one is to compare the touring experience of the tour done during the best season with the off-season tour, the differences are as stark as day and night.

With that said, the best season to do Kailash Kora or Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is from May to September.

May marks the recession of piercing winter. Although the temperature begins to rise in the last two weeks of April, the difference starts to become perceptible from the beginning of May.

The snow starts to melt, opening up the tracks and highways to the Kailash and Mansarovar premises and the icy and slippery trekking trails begin to thaw.

The weather during May and the following few months feels as if the divinity that lies within Kailash and Mansarovar is inviting people towards itself.

May to September is considered the best time to travel to Kailash Mansarovar. Even among these months, May, June, and September are considered very suitable especially if you are doing the tour from Nepal.

Kailash Mansarovar Tour from Nepal during July and August.

July and August are monsoon months in Nepal. Relentless downpour swells the rivers to their biggest size, temporarily turns small rivulets into roaring rivers, and drench dusty lands and turn them muddy.

That means for anyone doing the Kailash Yatra from Nepal, the drive from Kathmandu to Timure can be quite precarious. The chances of landslides and roadblocks can be high.

But once you cross the Nepal-China border and start gaining elevation the effect of monsoon starts to fade out.

After you reach Kerung County, there will be no signs of heavy rainfall. There could be sporadic rainfall in the Kailash Mansarovar region but it will be nowhere near the heavy downpour that Nepal experiences during Monsoon.

So, the only precarious part is the drive from Kathmandu to Timure, but this also might not be as risky as it appears.

In Tibet, May to September observes a mild temperature ranging from 5 Degrees Celsius to 15 Degrees Celsius, however, the nighttime temperature can still be as low as 0 Degrees Celsius. The sky, during the majority of the time, will be clear with exceptional visibility.

Festivals like Saga Dawa and Janai Purnima also fall at this time, which ensures rich cultural and religious exploration.

The Himalayas on the northern border of Nepal block almost all the monsoon clouds, so there are no rainfalls during monsoon. In July and August, some monsoon clouds might escape the Himalayan walls causing occasional rain and cloud cover in the sky, however, the weather conditions are fleeting and not much of an issue.

Sometimes, pilgrims and tourists assert that these clouds and drizzling water droplets make the ambiance even more mysterious and incorporeal.

The trekking trail around the Kailash Parvat is devoid of the snow sheath contributing to the optimum trail conditions. All the Hotels and businesses remain open during this time of the year, serving the pilgrims and tourists.

Equinox falls in the last week of September, after which the temperatures begin to plummet rapidly. By the second week of October, the winter conditions would be prevalent all over Tibet, accounting for unfavorable conditions for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

All these factors contribute to the conclusion that May to September is a perfect time to do Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

Altitude Sickness during Kailash Mansarovar Tour and Kailash Parikrama.

Altitude sickness is a health condition when our body has problems adjusting to the atmosphere with lower oxygen concentration and atmospheric pressure, usually caused by rapid elevation gain. This condition can be lethal if unattended cautiously.

Tibet is a region with the highest average elevation of more than 4,500 meters. The concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere is almost half. While doing Kailash Parikrama, pilgrims and trekkers will have to ascend to an altitude of up to 5,600 meters.

Ascending to high elevation without necessary precautions and acclimatization can be detrimental to health. So there will be a risk of altitude sickness for anyone doing the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra if necessary precautions are not followed.

Acclimatization is giving our body time to adapt to the thinning atmosphere by staying in a specific place for an additional time period. Not secluding extra days for acclimatization can be deleterious to health. Our Kailash Mansarovar Tour itinerary consists of two acclimatizing days, one at Saga and one at Mansarovar.

The designated acclimatizing days will help pilgrims and tourists evade altitude sickness.

There are additional things pilgrims and tourists can do to evade altitude sickness. The first thing is Hydration. Hydration is a must, we provide you with 2 liters of water every day, and expect you to hydrate yourself enough. The next thing you can do is, report early symptoms. If symptoms like dizziness, nausea, headache, lethargy, insomnia, etc. are observed then you should promptly report to our team.

Our team has oximeters and necessary medications that can help you avoid altitude sickness. All you need to do is report any early signs so that we can take action quickly.

Afterward, our team with the cooking staff will prepare vegetarian meals throughout the tour. As Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a sacred pilgrimage tour we will prepare unsullied and ritually pure vegetarian meals for our clients.

As the cuisine culture of China is quite different, preparing your own meals also prevents any chances of food poisoning and stomach upsets.

Kailash Expedition. Has anyone climbed Mount Kailash?

Climbing Mount Kailash is prohibited. Due to its religious significance to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bonpa religions, climbing or attempting to climb Mount Kailash is a crime punishable by Chinese law. Chinese Government explicitly prohibited mountaineering expeditions of Mount Kailash in 2011.

However, this was not always the case. Several attempts to scale the sacred peak were carried out, none of which was successful. People believe that climbing Mt. Kailash is impossible, and anyone who attempts to scale the Kailash Parvat will meet with sudden adverse changes in weather imposed by the sacred peak itself.

There is a Tibetan legend that says that a Tibetan Monk named Milarepa summited the peak in the 11th century, however, there is no evidence of a successful summit. It is believed that only a person who is free of sin is capable of climbing the Kailash Parvat.

So for now, no humans living or dead have summitted Mount Kailash, except a probable contender monk Milerepa.
