To cover the staggering distance of 136 miles the trek spans for around 25 days, with total 20 hiking days, which is quite long when compared to other popular treks done in Nepal. Kanchenjunga Base Camp is also known as Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, and it is graded as strenuous trek which requires a good physical fitness and strong mentality. The trail stretches to 220 km or 136 miles of horizontal distance, from south western part of Taplejung to northeastern region. Though the trail is similar, depending upon the proceedings of the trek the itinerary and entire trek program can vary entirely.
The standard route takes trekkers first to Southern Base Camp then to Northern Base Camp. Assuming the trekker is at Kathmandu, a quick flight of 45 minutes will take trekker to Bhadrapur of Jhapa. From Bhadrapur it will take around 7-9 hours bus ride to get to Phungling, Taplejung which is the point from where the trek commences. The first stretch of the trek spans mostly on lower hilly region of Taplejung, crossing rivers, going over hills, and traversing through valleys. This initial stretch begins from Phungling Taplejung, then passes through Lalikharka, Phawakhola, Khasewa, Mamankhe and then to Yamphudin. There is no elevation gain during the initial stretch, any elevation gained during ascent is nullified by the subsequent descent. The second stretch which is marks the beginning of harder section of the trail starts after Yamphudin.
The second stretch of the trek beings from Yamphudin all the way to Southern Base Camp of Kanchenjunga also known as Oktang. The second stretch beings with a vertical climb of almost 1.5 km to Lasiya Bhanjyang then descend to Tortong. This section is very strenuous, considering the massive elevation gain and steep climb. From Tortong the trail traverse along Simbuwa Khola initially reaching Anda Phedi, Tseram(Cheram) and Lapsang, where Simbuwa Khola originates from Yalung Glacier. The trail further passes Ramchaur and reaches Oktang, and subsequently retracts till Anda Phedi.. The second stretch end at Anda Phedi.
The next stretch begins from Anda Phedi all the way to Ghunsa. This section of the trail spans on region whose elevation higher than 4,000 meters or 13,123 feet, because of its higher average elevation this section of the trek is one of the most difficult sections of the trek. The trail will pass through Sinion La Pass, Sele La pass then finally reaching Ghunsa.
From Ghunsa the trail will lead trekkers to North Base Camp of Kanchenjunga. The trail passes through Kambachen, and Lhonak before finally reaching Kanchenjunga Base Camp. This stretch from Ghunsa to the base camp is the most challenging section of the entire trek. The average elevation throughout the trek is significantly higher than other sections of the trail, the atmosphere becomes rarefied and because of this trekker will find themselves stopping after every few steps to catch their breath.
The final stretch of the route is the descend, from Kanchenjung Base Camp all the way to Phungling. Trekkers initially retrace their steps back to Ghunsa from KBC, then from Ghunsa trekkers will walk through previously unexplored Amjilosa, Chirwa, and Mitlung to Phungling Taplejung. From Taplejung 7-8 hrs of bus ride will take trekkers to Bhadrapur. From Bhadrapur trekkers can catch a 45 minutes flight to Kathmandu.
The alternate also starts from Phungling but moves along the trail in reverse order. It first approaches Northern Kanchenjunga Base Camp then cross Selele La pass to reach Southern Kanchenjunga Base Camp at Oktang. The trail is similar, but the check points, lodging locations and acclimatization place can vary.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek to be an ultimate trek of your life.
Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is considered as one of the most challenging treks done in Eastern Himalayas of Nepal, and indeed it is physically exacting. One will spend almost a month traversing through the trail which reach elevation as high as 5200 meters or 17,060 feet where a person is more likely to get altitude sickness because of rarefied atmosphere. The trail is very less trodden which means that the luxuries and sophistication found in other widely commercialized trail will be absent. There will be very few number of lodges and eateries, with very very basic facilities. Sometimes, in cases of no lodging establishment trekkers might have to set up tent. In addition to that, there will be days where the trekkers will have to walk for 7-8 hours a day which requires good stamina. For these reasons trekkers should be wary of the Physical fitness required for the High Passes Trek
For anyone who is thinking of embarking on this demanding trek, he/she must be physically active and fit. A trekker must not have any underlying condition especially related to cardiovascular and pulmonary disease, which compromise the oxygen carrying capacity of blood. Also, previous experience of trekking in high altitude is a huge plus point, or if any person has experience of living in high altitude with rarefied atmosphere, then they can do this trek.
We require our clients to have a good physical fitness, for us the benchmark for good physical fitness means fitness level that allows an individual to walk for 6-8 hours daily with rests in between. This level of physical fitness is a must but the good thing is it is quite feasible. With some months of training and proper diet a person can achieve this level of fitness. Going on a short hike nearby, morning and evening walks, or jogging, or hour of cardio at gym and scrutinizing your diet it is quite achievable. One thing that is essential too is correct mentality and zealous determination to conquer this strenuous trek. If you have these or can build up these characteristics within you then you not booking this trek with us is the only thing that can prevent you from relishing this trek.
Well, that is a pretty subjective question but let us make it easy for you to determine if it is the right trek for you.
If you hate doing treks in overly commercialized trail, which have lost its original essence then Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek can be the one for you. Moreover, if you want to challenge your own limits and embark on strenuous trek to the North and South base camp of Mt. Kanchenjunga; Third highest peak on the planet then it further strengthens the evidence that this trek is right for you. Kanchenjunga, Kanchenjunga Central, Kanchenjunga South, Kirat Chuli, Pathibara, Kabru I-IV, kangbachen, Gimmigela Chuli and many other peaks from close proximity then, there is not a single reason that this trek is not for you.

It probably will be late evening when you reach Taplejung or Phungling to be specific. You will be checked in at a lodge where you will spend the night.
Overnight at Taplejung.
The day’s hike is quite easy, perfect to warm your muscle, stretch your tendons and ligaments, and to just get you ready for the thrilling adventure waiting for you.
The trek officially commences from the Phungling Taplejung. You will walk on stone paved path passing through Limbu Villages all the way to Lalikharka. On the way you will pass through temples, stupas, abandoned Suketar Airport and lush green forest. From Deurali Pass/Bazar you will take right turn and descend till Lalikharka. From Suketar to Deurali Bazar there are several viewpoints providing beautiful views of surrounding landscapes, very conspicuous view of the hill where revered Pathibhara temple is situated at. This section of the trail is shared with pilgrims making pilgrimage trek to Pathibhara.
At Lalikhara you will be checked in at a lodge to spend the night.
Overnight at Lalikharka.
Today you will cross Phawakhola and travel from one hill ridge to another. It will be quite long hike with overall loss in elevation, there will be ascends and descends passing through beautiful villages and greeneries cloaking the trail.
“Kharka” means pasture lands, a grazing ground for cattles. Lalikharka is also a pastures land for sheeps, cows and other cattle of natives. The hike begins with the ascend till Pawakhola. It passes through villages predominantly inhabited by Kirati people. After crossing Pawakhola begins the ascend. The trail passes through thick forest with prominent population of oak, maple, junipers, and rhododendrons. The trail takes you up and over the hill ridge to beautiful Limbu Village of Khesewa.
At Khesewa you can witness the fascinating culture, tradition and lifestyle of Kirat community. These villages have been very less influenced by external influences and have preserved its intrinsic charm and beauty. You will get to observe the slow-paced ascetic lifestyle of Kirati people and their reverence for and dependence on nature.
You will be checked in at a lodge to spend the night.
It is actually similar to the hike of previous day’s, passing through beautiful village, lush forest and crossing streams and small river. The trail also observes the elevation loss of almost 4,000 meters or 13,123 feet. The hike covers approximately 12-13 km of distance.
Leaving the beautiful Limbu Village behind you will start tread on the trail passing through bucolic villages, terrace fields, lush forest and small streams rushing downhill. With several ascends and descends the trail passes through Yanthung and Lukhding before moving laterally on the hillside of Phungphung danda and eventually crossing the ridge. The trail then further descends, crosses Khaksewa Khola before gaining some elevation and finally reaching Mamankhe.
Mamankhe is yet another enchanting Limbu village obscurely situated between the crevasse and ridges of hilly landscape.
You will be checked in at a lodge where you will the good night’s rest.
It is an easy hike before the harder section of the trail begins. The hike covers comparatively less distance but there is an elevation gain of around 300 meters or 984 feet.
Leaving Mamankhe you will descend down and cross Kabeli Khola through suspension bridge. The trail will take you through two hill passes; Ekchana Bhanjyang and Ghatichhine Bhanjyang, villages like Ratetar, Huputar and Tartum in succession. You will have to cross Othan Khola and Rate Khola streams gushing down to coalesce with Kabeli Khola. The trail passing through lush greeneries will mesmerize with beautiful waterfalls.
Crossing a suspension bridge again will get you to Makduwa village, after which a small ascend will take you to Yamphudin village.
At Yamphudin you will be checked in at a lodge/teahouse where you will crash on a lodge for the night.
Now starts the harder part of the trek. The horizontal distance covered might be less but the ascend and descend you will do today will surely tire you.
Leaving your modestly sophisticated Yamphuding Lodge behind you will follow the trail that traverses alongside Amjikhola. After reaching Phedi the steep climb starts. The climb is strenuous through the thick forest mostly populated with deciduous Oaks, Junipers, Birches, Firs, and Rhododendrons. By the time you would have reached the Lassiya Bhanjyang (Hill pass) that sits on the top of the hill you would have gained staggering elevation of 1,200 meters or 3,937 feet from where you started. Taking in consideration that you only would have covered 2600 meters or 8,530 feet of horizontal distance, the climb sure is daunting.
After crossing the pass, you will be descending down till Tortong but you won’t be losing much elevation. The descend sounds like an easy thing, but it isn’t. The descend is equally tiring and difficult as ascend, it will be hard on your knees and toes. Finishing the descend and crossing Simbuwa Khola through suspension bridge will get you to Tortong.
You will crash at the lodge and let your legs recover from the strenuous trek of the day.
It will be yet another day on the hard part of the trail. The trail will take you to Tseram or Cheram with an elevation gain of almost 900 meters or 2,952 feet.
Leaving the beautiful Tortong behind you will follow the trail towards Tseram. The trail moves along Simbuwa Khola passing through Andaphedi. Because it is off the beaten path trek the trail is not heavily commercialized like other popular trek in Nepal, so there would be comparatively less teahouses, shops, and lodges along the way. The trail traverses through thick forest of Birch, Oak, Juniper, Fir and Rhododendron. The elevation gain will be slow, and steady all the way to gradual. Along the way you will come across sparsely populated Sherpa village.
At Tseram you will be checked in at a teahouse where you will spend the night.
You are at altitude above 3,500 meters or 11,482 feet, the oxygen content of the atmosphere is lesser than that found at sea level. So, it is very necessary that we let our body adapt to this new environment. Today you will not gain any elevation. You can explore around Tseram, maybe a short walk to nearby forest, roast marshmallow, talk with fellow trekkers.
By doing so you will give your body sufficient time to adapt with rarefied atmosphere and increase oxygen efficiency of the body which is indispensable.
Today the trail will take you to the Ramche, also called as Ramchaur which lies far beyond the origin point of Simbuwa Khola. The trail from Cheram to Ramchaur/Ramche observes elevation gain of 700 meters or 2,296 ft, and covers the distance of around 7 km.
You leave Cheram behind following the trail, keeping the Simbuwa Khola to your right. The trail initially passes through Yalung Bara then take you to the terminal end of the Yalung Glacier which is also the originating point of Simbuwa Khola. Further following the trail will take you to Lapsang and finally to Ramchaur. As you approach Ramchaur the mountain vistas start to divulge their beauty to you. The breathtaking snowcapped mountain starts to reveal its beauty to all the trekkers.
At Ramchaur you be stay in tea house. If there are no rooms at tea house at Ramchaur, you might have to pitch a tent and camp for the night.
The trek today will take you to the southern base camp of Kanchenjunga, Oktang and back to Tseram. The hike is alongside the moraine Yalung Glacier, and the way to Oktang is quite perilous, and rocky. The hike will be quite difficult because of higher elevation.
You will leave Ramchaur in pursuit of Oktang or South Base Camp of Kanchenjunga. The views from Oktang are indubitably one of the best of Kanchenjunga and adjoining peaks. One can spot Kanchenjung, Kanchenjunga South, Kanchenjunga Central, Yalung Khang, Kabru I-IV and many more. Mt. Kanchenjunga is not only a mountain but also religiously significant landmark for Kirati, Hindus and Buddhist. At Oktang one can find shrine adorned with prayer flags and “Abir & Keshari” (Red and yellow worshipping colors of Hindus) on sculptures of deity.
After relishing the views at Oktang you will trace back your steps all the way back to Tseram where you will spend the night.
The hike today is like one of those hard hikes of strenuous trek. It will take you from Cheram to Selele La pass, that sits at an elevation of 4,480m/14,698ft.
The trail initially leaves Tseram and descends down till Andaphedi. From Andaphedi the trail will ascend cross Sinion La pass and starts traversing through highlands. From Sinion La you will get mesmerizing view of nearby landscapes and mountain peaks west to Kanchenjunga Range like Mt. Everest and Makalu. Further traversing through the trail will get you to Selele La pass. Selele La pass provides comprehensive view of nearby landscapes and even more beautiful of mountain peaks. Previously unseen peaks of Kanchenjunga range start to reveal itself to appease the sightseeing desires of trekkers. The view of Everest and Makalu becomes even more conspicuous and enchanting.
The teahouse at Selela will serve you a shelter for the night.
The hike today will be quite easy as compared to previous day. The trail will take you to Ghunsa which is a lower elevation region, and there will be descend with almost no ascends.
You will leave Selele La pass with its beautiful views and start descending. The trail will enter regions with fairly modest amount of vegetation mostly consisting firs, junipers, and oaks. The downhill trail eventually takes you to Ghunsa. At Ghunsa you will see a beautiful village, farmlands and ample number of lodges and teahouses, where you can put down your portmanteau and rest your shoulders.
At Ghunsa you will be checked in at a tea house/lodge where you will spend the night.
The trail today will take you from beautiful village of Ghunsa to yet another beautiful village of Kambachen. There will be elevation gain of almost 550 meters or 1,804 feet and horizontal distance coverage of almost 11 km from Ghunsa To Kambachen/Kangpachen.
The trail moves heads toward north direction keeping Ghunsa Khola to the right. As you follow the trail you will be crossing small streams which amalgamates with Ghunsa khola making it swell and increasing its current. You will spot amazing waterfalls on the way as well. You will cross cross one of the stream with help of suspension bridge and reach Rampuk Kharka a pasture land. The further moving northward you will pass through dangerous rockfall section before reaching Laykep, last check point before reaching Kangpachen. From Lakyep you will get to Kambachen with beautiful villages, stone huts, and farmlands in not time. Along the way you will get breathtaking view of Kumbakarna, Western side of Kanchenjunga Massif, and many other prominent peaks. You will also get to see Kumbakarna Glacier.
At Kambachen you will check in at a lodge/tea house where you will spend the night and get much needs rest.
This check point will take you to the last stopping point before Kanchenjunga North Base Camp of Pangpema. There will be elevation gain of more than 700 meters or 2,296ft.
Leaving Kanmbachen you will follow the trail that moves along Ghunsa Khola approaching the terminal end of Kanchenjunga Galcier. The trail will pass through precarious rockfall area before you reach Ramthang. Surpassing Ramthang you will reach the terminal end of Kanchenjunga Glacier and subsequently reach Lhonak. Before reaching Lhonak one can observe ruins of snow huts which used to be the shelters for sheep and yak herders. Lhonak though is not a settlement, it still have ample lodges and teahouses build to facilitate trekkers doing Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek.
At Lhonak you will be checked in at a lodge where you will crash for the night.
Today the trail will take you to the culmination point of the trek, Kanchenjunga Base Camp for which we will have to surpass Pangpema. This is the highest elevation this trek will take you to. Kanchenjunga Base Camp is surrounded by mountain and glaciers all around. The views from KBC are breathtaking, the dazzling beauty of Mt. Kanchenjunga, Ramtang, Gimmigela Chuli, Kambachen, Yalung Khang West, Yalung Khang, Kirat Chuli, Taaple Shikhar, Kirat Chuli etc. are no longer concealed and are on display for trekkers to savor. Not only that, Kanchenjunga Glaciers and Pathibhara Glacier can also be easily observed from Kanchenjunga Base Camp.
Following the precarious trail along the Kanchenjunga Glacier’s Moraine you will get to Pangpema which is a pasture with a small tea house and ruins of stone huts. The views from Pangpema is mesmerizing as well and many trekkers don’t proceed beyond Pangpema, but you will trek all the way to Kanchenjunga Base Camp. The viewing pleasure from Kanchenjunga Base Camp is even more magnificent and unparallelled. Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is off-the-beaten-path trek done in eastern Himalayas of Nepal. The trail is very less commercialized because the number of trekkers is very less on this trail. Well, these aspects have both good and bad side.
The good side is that, trekkers will have an opportunity to witness the pristine nature, and unblemished villages throughout the trail. Also, because the trail is not crowed the trail is very enjoyable for those who wants to enjoy the nature to the fullest with very little disturbance.
The bad sides are, there are no proper tourist establishments. There are very few lodges, shop and other tourist establishment build throughout the trail. Trekkers will be lodged at lodges found on major check points throughout the trail most of the time. The lodges have very basic and modest lodging facilities, sometimes even bare minimum because of its remoteness and location on less commercialized trail. However, our team will have with them camping tents, and necessary food ration with them, which will be used when we unable to secure a lodging space or upon request of our client(trekkers). Our team will pitch tent, make dinner and serve you food if camping. Trekkers will sleep in sleeping bag inside a tent.
The food also will be nourishing but not like delicacies that you might have in cities. At morning before the start of the trek trekkers will have Breakfast usually consisting Tea, egg, boiled chickpeas, and (Tibetan bread or other variety of four based breads. Then as clock approach midday there will be lunch, mostly Daal (Letil soup), Bhaat (Rice) accompanied by curry (vegetable or meat) and spicy minced tomato salad. For dinner there will be another round of Daal, Bhaat, curry and spicy mince tomato salad. The food options are very limited on this trail, but over the year there have been several lodges and tea houses constructed that offers different meal options to the trekkers.
It has been only few years that the lodges were established along the trail. Otherwise, trekkers would often sleep in either tents or shed with shepherds. The compromise made on fooding and lodging is reimbursed by the pristine, placid and crowdless trail of Kanchenjunga.
