Is Kathmandu Heritage Walk Suitable for Me?

It depends on what you are looking for. However, with our 20 years of experience, we assure you that the tour is unlike anything else. It aberrates from the orthodox way of exploring Kathmandu, taking you to explore the raw side of the city. It takes you to the local markets, alleyways, and shrines, and temples hidden in the concrete jungle.

The Kathmandu Heritage Walk tour is for those who love to witness the side of the city that most tourists overlook, and this tour is for you if you like the idea of it.

However, if you are looking for a day tour of popular UNESCO sites then this Kathmandu walk might not be your cup of tea. Kathmandu Heritage Walk Itinerary

Guide Meet Up

Our Guide will contact you and arrive at your hotel, at the designated time. There you will meet with your guide who will take you for the Kathmandu Walking Tour.

Explore the Market of Thamel

You begin the tour by exploring the market of Thamel. There are myriads of shops and local businesses that sell handicrafts, fabric, souvenirs, and gifts that you would like to buy for yourself and your dear ones. You can stop at stores to make a purchase.

Walk to Kathi Swayambhu Stupa through Thahity

Leaving Thamel and its colorful market behind, the Kathmandu walk heads to Kathi Swayambhu stupa through the alleyways of Thahity.

Kathiswayambhu Stupa is a replica of the Swayambunath Stupa built in the 16th century. It is a peaceful retreat from the bustle and honking of the streets. Our guide will give you detailed information about the visiting site. When you arrive at Kathi Swayambu Stupa you wouldn’t believe that a structure like this can be situated in a place so congested.

Walk to Aakash Bhairab Temple Indrachowk

After exploring Kathi Swayambhu Stupa you will continue your walk in Kathmandu towards Indrachowk. Indrachowk is one of the busiest junctions of the entire Kathmandu.

At Indrachowk you will see Aakash Bhairab Temple. The temple is adorned with beautiful wood carvings and metal engravings. Aakash Bhairab is a form of Lord Shiva and the temple is considered the abode of Kirat King Yalamber.

Explore Gold Souk of Newroad

Afterwards, you will visit Gold Souk of New Road. Gold Souk means a market filled with gold shops. The Gold Souk at Newroad is a place where one can buy anything related to gold.

The Gold shops in Nepal operate differently than in the western country, you can observe the ways gold is traded in Gold Souk of Newroad.

Walk to Annapurna Temple at Ason Street

Subsequently, after visiting Gold Souk of New Road, you will head towards Ason Street, which is one of the busiest streets of Kathmandu. With shops and businesses present everywhere, the market is a go-to place for locals to buy fabrics, utensils, and many other utilities. At Ason Street, you will visit Annapurna Temple, Annapurna Temple is yet another masterpiece of deft artisans of Kathmandu.

Annapurna Temple and other shrines found along the walking tour are a testament to how gods have protected humans and how humans have protected gods.

Walk to Sankata Temple Via Bhotahity

From Ason Street, you will head towards Sankata Temple through Bhotahity. Sankata Temple is an important shrine for both Hindus and Buddhists. The temple was built during the reign of King Gunakamdev.

Sanka Temple is situated in a big courtyard surrounded by houses and buildings on all sides.

Walk Back to Hotel

After visiting Sankata Temple the Kathmandu Heritage Walk concludes. You will then begin your walk back to the Hotel accompanied by our guide.

Trip Information

When to Go for the Kathmandu Heritage Walk Tour?

The Kathmandu Heritage Walk is done in and through the busiest markets of Kathmandu. Choosing the right day and the best time of the day is elemental to ensure an optimum exploration experience. Here are some tips on when to Go for the Kathmandu Heritage Walk.

Saturday is a public holiday, so markets and shops will be closed, also the crowd will be less. If you are anticipating visiting the market then Saturday isn’t a good day for the Kathmandu Walking Tour. Touring on weekdays will ensure that you will get to witness the lively markets of Ason and Indrachowk. However, if you aren’t looking forward to visiting the market then a tour during a public holiday will be good for you.

Also, the market and shops begin to open at noon, so doing the tour early in the morning can prevent you from exploring the market. However, you can observe devotees in shrines and stupas if you go on Kathmandu Heritage Walk early in the morning.

If you can, we suggest tourers schedule the day tour on the weekdays when there are no public holidays, 1-2 hours past noon. The crowd will be less and you will be able to enjoy the tour without any compromise.

Scammers, Pick Pocket and Swindlers

The sites are often filled with officious scammers and swindlers. They might approach and nag you to make you purchase their service and/or product. This can be very irritating and can spoil the whole tour.

Our guides are always with you, in case of such situations our guides will get rid of scammers and swindlers. That is why it is important to have a guide with you.

Also, keep your belongings with yourself in a secure manner. Keep cash, mobile phones, and other valuables in a zipped bag if not in use.

Bargain While Shopping

In markets and shops in Thamel and the sites you will be visiting during the Kathmandu Heritage Walk, the vendors or salespersons will try to charge a “Premium tourist rate” price for not-so-premium stuff. If you feel like you are being overpriced don’t hesitate to bargain. A good bargain can reduce the cost of the good by 15-40%. This applies to most of the stores and shops targeted towards tourists.

Before you eat at any restaurant ask for the menu and while paying the bill corroborate the price on the menu to the receipt.

Before you go for the Kathmandu Heritage Walking

There are some things we would like you to tick off before you go for the Kathmandu Heritage Walk. Doing and checking the things mentioned below will accentuate your travel experience and obviate the chances of you being in an undesired situation.

  1. Sunscreen, Sunglasses, and Tissues: We suggest travelers use sunscreen, wear sunglasses, and carry tissues. While visiting the designated sites you might get sunburned so sunscreen and sunglasses are highly recommended. Carrying a tissue is also highly recommended.
  2. Clothing: The Kathmandu Heritage Walk will take you for the exploration of unfrequented religious sites, local markets, and busy streets of Kathmandu. So, we request our clients to dress modestly respecting the culture and beliefs of locals. In addition to that you will definitely don’t want unwarranted attention because of your clothing. During winter wearing warm yet comfortable clothes is recommended. You should wear masks when navigating through the crowd.
  3. Camera: The ambiance, vibe, and sights of Kathmandu is something that cannot be found anywhere else. A camera, be it a smartphone, will be an indispensable gear for capturing the essence and beauty of Kathmandu. Have a camera or a smart ready to go to capture moments as they happen to or around you.
  4. Water: Breakfree Adventures will provide the water during the trip. We suggest travelers hydrate themselves.
  5. Cash: We highly suggest travelers have sufficient Nepalese Rupee cash with them. You might want to buy snacks or local foods, souvenirs, gifts, and fabrics for yourself or your dear ones during the tour so having NPR cash is a must. You can exchange foreign currency at the hotel you are staying, nearest banks, or at money exchanges near your hotel.
  6. Weather: We recommend that hikers check the weather forecast for the day. It will help determine what to wear and bring for the day hiking tour.
