Major Attractions of Langtang Helicopter Trek.

Kyangjin Ri and Tserko Ri.

Kyangjin Ri is a hill summit exactly north of Kyangjin Kharka. It is an easier day hike compared to the Tserko Ri hike. Situated 4,773 meters/15,659 ft above sea level, the hike from Kyangjin Gompa to Kyangjin Ri observes an elevation gain of almost 1,200 meters/3,937 ft. The hike from Kyangjin Gompa is an arduous hike, with steep ascends through a rocky trail. But the arduous hike is rewarded with a mesmerizing view of Mountain peaks. From Kyangjin Gompa one can witness the mesmerizing view of the Langtang Range, surrounding mountain peaks, and the nearby landscapes.

Tserko Ri locally known as Chergo Ri is one of the major attractions of Langtang Gosai Kunda Trek. Chergo Ri is yet another hill summit that is situated farther northeast of Kyangjin Gompa than Kyangjin Ri. Tserko Ri’s day hike is usually done during exploration day, the day after spending a night at Kyangjing Gompa. This day hike is one of the most strenuous sections of the entire trek as it observes an elevation gain of a staggering 1,500 meters/4,921 ft. Tserko Ri is situated at an elevation of 4,984 meters/16,351 ft. The view from the Chergo Ri hill summit is just magical and probably the best to witness the glory of the Langtang Range.

Once can gaze at mountain peaks like Kyangjin Ri(4,713 m/15,462 ft), Tsergo (Chergo) Ri(4,984 m/16,351 ft), Gosai Kunda, Lauribina Pass(4,610 m/15,124ft), Thadepati Pass (3,690m/12,106ft) and many more providing a beautiful view of mountain peaks like Langtang Lirung (7,227 m/23,710ft), Langtang II (6,596 m/21,640ft), Yubra (6,264m/20,551ft), Yala Peak (5,550 m/18,208ft), Dorothea Himal (5,748 m/18,858ft), Penzom Himal(5719 m/18,763 ft), Langshisa Ri(6,427 m/21,085), Gangchempo(6,387 m/20,954ft), Pangen Dopku(6,930 m/22,736ft), Naya Kanga(5,863 m/19,235ft), Yansa Tsenji(6,567 m/21,545ft) and many more. Trekkers can also get a beautiful view of the landscapes below with its green valleys, rivers, streams, and glaciers. All in all, Tserko Ri is one of the major highlights of the entire trek, which requires stern determination and willingness.

Kyangjin Gompa, and Pristine Unadulterated villages of Langtang Valley

Kyangjin Gompa is the last village/settlement area located on the trekking trail. The village is situated at an altitude of 3,830 meters/12,565ft above sea level. Named after ancient Gompa, this village is mostly populated by people belonging to the Tamang community. This community is believed to have migrated from Tibet over 400 years ago. It is a beautiful village where its essence has remained intact and preserved and has successfully remained unspoiled. While in this village trekkers will get to witness and even be part of the daily life of the people of this region. Trekkers can visit Yak Cheese Factory which produces all kinds of dairy products from Yak milk.

Like Kyangjin Gompa throughout the trail, trekkers will come across villages where time has stood still. Where life is more relaxed and slower-paced, where the materialistic nature of humans has subsided and people have learned to enjoy and cherish the small things. These villages that trekkers will come across are mostly inhabited by people of the Tamang and Sherpa communities. One can find the true essence of village life while passing through these villages. Because the trail is off the beaten path, it is much less commercialized and is not very crowded even during the season. This factor can be attributed to the villages and settlements being unadulterated by modern influence. One can witness the quintessential rural village of Nepal while on this trek.

Unique Buddhist Culture, Tradition, and Lifestyle of Tamang and Sherpa Community.

The places through which the trail passes are mostly inhabited by people of the Tamang and Sherpa Communities. The Tamang and Sherpa community is believed to have migrated from Tibet around 600-700 years ago. This is why the culture, tradition, and lifestyle that trekkers come across during the trek might seem different than those found in typical Nepalese cities.

Tamang and Sherpa communities have a prominent Tibetan influence on their culture, tradition, and lifestyle. They mostly follow Mahayana Buddhism. Tamang community celebrates Sonam Lhosar or Chinese New Year, whereas Sherpa People celebrate Gyalpo Lhosar which is Tibetan New Year. Trekkers will observe prayer flags, walls with prayer wheels, Chhorten, Buddhist shrines, stupas, and stone inscriptions all over the trail. The local architecture is also fascinating sightings for the trekkers, homes with stone roofs, low ceilings, wooden beams, and other similar things can be seen.

The lifestyle of people living in these regions is also very intriguing. With no proper road connection, and very little availability of resources people of the Langtang region have persevered and thrived in these regions. They depend heavily on farming on very scant arable land available, and cattle for sustenance. Yak and Sheep are the major cattle that have assisted them to survive in these harsh conditions.

Langtang Gosai Kunda Trek will put you on the front-row seat and allow you to witness the fascinating culture, tradition, and austere lifestyle of the Tamang and Sherpa Communities of this region. You will get to familiarize yourself with the countless untold stories of woe and joy of people Langtang.

Langtang National Park (Buffer Zone), varied flora and fauna.

Occupying regions of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Sindhupalchowk Langtang National Park spreads to an area of 1710 sq km, with a buffer zone of 420 sq km. Langtang National Park is a protected area affluent with diverse biodiversity. More than 18 ecosystem types can be found inside the National Park.  Many rare animals like Red Pandas, Himalayan Black Beak, Snow Leopard, Ghoral, etc. can be found inside the Langtang National Park. More than 250 species of birds have been recorded inside the national park. Thick forests of Rhododendrons, Birch, Oak, Larch, Chirpine, etc. can be found in regions below tree line altitude inside Langtang Valley. Trekking amidst and through regions with such natural affluence will detach anyone from hectic modern day-to-day life and unite one’s soul will nature. The sound of water flowing on small streams and rivers will constantly remind you of the beauty and prowess of Mother Nature.

Mesmerizing Helicopter ride over Langtang Valley with a Breathtaking view of surrounding mountain ranges and landscapes.

The day after trekkers complete the arduous summit of Tserko Ri, also known locally as Chergo Ri, a chartered helicopter will hover over at Kyanjin Gompa, which will provide trekkers a visual ecstasy that every adventurer dreams of. Trekkers will get on the Helicopter, which will take its passengers on the voyage to enjoy the visual exhibition. As the Helicopter starts to hover over the Langtang sky, the whole scenery becomes ethereal. The mountain view becomes eminent, with Langtang Range adamantly showing its glory and grandeurs to onlookers hovering on Langtang Skier, trekkers will get a different perspective to enjoy and relish the beauty of greenery and lush forest, overlooking the view of veinlike streams coalescing to Langtang Khola further accentuates the thrill of the Helicopter ride. All in all Helicopter flight over and out of Langtang Valley is other worldly experience, a tale to tell at Thanksgiving dinner, a conversation starter, and a memory that will etch on the minds of trekkers till the end of the time.

Why Langtang Helicopter Trek and not regular Langtang Valley Trek?

Exploring any place with an aerial view unravels a perspective that never fails to stupefy trekkers and explorers. Sure, trekking has its charm and beauty but witnessing the beauty of a specific place from the air is completely unparalleled.

This Langtang Heli Trek will just do that. In addition to witnessing the charm and beauty of Langtang from overland, while trekking to Kyanjin Ri, trekkers will also get to observe the beauty of the Langtang region from a different perspective, a perspective that is not at the disposal of conventional trekkers. The helicopter fly-out will not only transport you from Langtang to Kathmandu but also provide a thrilling flying experience. Right after the helicopter starts to hover over Langtang Valley, the sight of Langtang range and surrounding snow-capped peaks begin to become eminent. The overlooking view of the entire Langtang Valley landscape comprising lush forests, veinous streams, glaciers, and scattered settlement areas will give you an encyclopedic geographic idea of Langtang Valley. The Helicopter flight will expedite the entire trek by 3 days and prevent you from doing a long hike from Kyanjin Gompa to the Lama Hotel right after the previous day’s arduous climb of Tserko Ri.

Sure, the standard Langtang Valley Trek is sublime, it is an ecclesiastical trekking experience where different aspects of the Langtang Region can be relished. It is adored and praised by trekkers all around the world. But the Langtang Heli Trek brings to the table an uncompromising experience of witnessing the beauty of the Langtang Region, which is why every trekker should consider the Langtang Heli Trek package and ruminate over it before making a decision.

Essential Information for Lantang Heli Trek

Physical Fitness Required for Langtang Helicopter Trek. Can I do it?

Though there is a Helicopter flight at the end of the trek, Langtang Heli Trek is a strenuous trek. Trekkers will have to hike through challenging sections of the trail which is an adventure to pass through. The trek is done across treacherous terrain in high altitudes. Any person embarking on this trek will have to walk 5-6 hours daily (some days even more) for 4 days in high altitude landscapes of Langtang Region. So, trekkers need to assess whether they can do this trek or not.

Since, during the whole of the trek we will be traversing through high-altitude terrain, having sound physical health is a must. If you are physically fit and active, do not have underlying conditions, and can walk 5-6 hours daily with breaks for meals and rest then you can do Langtang Heli Trek. You don’t require previous trekking experience, our itinerary is curated in such a way that a novice adventurer trekker can do it, but it will be advantageous if you have any.

Even if you are not in the best shape of your life you can build up strength and stamina to do this trek successfully in 3–4-month duration. You will have to jog, exercise, and do cardio regularly for 3-4 months, and do short nearby hikes during weekends to build up your stamina and strength. Furthermore, our itinerary consists of an acclimatization day that will let your body adapt to the rarefied atmosphere of high altitude, to avoid altitude sickness. Throughout the day hike, there will be stops for rest and lunch.

Taking above mentioned things into consideration, if you think you possess the physical ability to walk 5-6 hours steadily, with stops for rest, daily as stated then indubitably you can do Langtang Heli Trek. Breakfree Adventures will be delighted to be your partner in this amazing trek of your lifetime.

Best Time to do Langtang Helicopter Trek.

Though the trek can be done all over the year as per trekkers’ choice, the weather climate and weather might make it onerous and risky during specific times of the year. So, it should not be neglected if you want to have the best experience, adventure, and exploration.

Spring Season (March to May)

The best time for Langtang Helicopter Trek is during spring (March to May). During this time of the year, weather is favorable with clear blue skies providing the most spectacular mountain panorama. In spring the temperature ranges from 20 degrees in the daytime and falls to 5 degrees at night which means that the climate will be mild as well. The sky is mostly clear, without fog or mist, which means very suitable conditions for a Helicopter flight.

Monsoon Season (June to August)

June to August is the time when the monsoon hits Nepal there will be chances of roadblocks due to landslides, the muddy and slippery trail will be infested with leeches, and many other issues, but some trekkers still prefer to trek in the monsoon. This time will be the off-season for trekking so lodges along the trails and the trail itself will be less crowded which some may prefer that way. Monsoon is not a providential time to do Langtang Helicopter Trek, due to clouds and fog the visibility is very poor making it almost impossible to operate a Helicopter flight to Langtang.

Monsoon is not a suitable time of the year to do Langtang Helicopter Trek.

Autumn Season (September to November)

September to November is Autumn in Nepal. As Autumn initiates precipitation begins to lessen and halts eventually, and the climate and temperature get milder. It is an ideal time to do Langtang Helicopter Trek which is the peak of trekking season. The skies are clearer allowing a clear mesmerizing view of surrounding landscapes and mountain panorama. As autumn approaches its terminal ending it starts to get colder. This is the best time to do the Langtang Helicopter Trek.

Winter Season (December to February)

December to February is winter, the time when it starts to snow. Winter trek of Langtang Helicopter Trek is a perilous yet adventurous hiking experience and as the mist settles down you will get the most beautiful mountain views. There might be several inches of snow throughout the trail, make sure you have crampons and ice sticks with you if you are doing a trek during winter seasons.

In winter, lodges will have few guests, and trails less crowded. Trekking during this time of the year required rigorous and deliberate planning. While slightly more appropriate than the trek done during Monsoon, still is not as auspicious as the trek done during Autumn and Spring.

Temperatures during the trek.

Temperature varies from month to month during Langtang Heli Trek which are;

  • March to May is the best month to trek with temperatures between 8 to 0 °C at high elevations.
  • June to August is the summer so the temperature will be warm. Besides it’s also the monsoon season so you need to be careful with wet and muddy trails. During the day it will be 10 to 23°C and nights will be 5°C to 10°C.
  • September to November is yet another best time to hike with temperatures at 20°C in high altitudes during the day with nights being colder around 5°C.
  • From December to February, daytime temperature can get as low as -10 °C at high altitudes.

Langtang Heli Trek Difficulty.

Langtang Heli Trek is a strenuous trek in the Langtang region. The trail takes trekkers off the beaten path of Langtang region. While following the trail trekkers will traverse through the lush forest of Langtang National Park to the dry and arid regions of Tserko Ri. The ascend and descend to and from the mesmerizing hill summit, Tserko Ri, consists of sections that are very precarious, steep, and dangerous, which requires utmost caution from trekkers. The higher elevation means that the chances of trekkers getting altitude sickness are high. There are sections on the trail that are perilous and risky to walk nonchalantly. Also, there are some days where trekkers will have to cover huge distances and elevations which is simply exhausting and exacting on the body. And for this reason, the Langtang Heli Trek is a strenuous trek.

For anyone willing to do Langtang Heli Trek, while not essential, previous high-altitude trekking experience is a benefit. To your aid, our guides and potters are well aware of the adversities and challenges of the trail and can deal accordingly with any inauspicious situation that may arise. The trek requires physical fitness which allows trekkers to walk 6-7 hours daily with breaks in between. Pairing this physical fitness with the trekkers’ determination and zeal to explore the Langtang Region, this challenging trek can be conquered easily.

Acclimatization and Altitude Sickness during the Trek.

Acclimatization while doing challenging and strenuous treks like the Langtang Heli Trek is a very important factor. Not allowing your body to acclimatize itself to the rarefied atmosphere can cause altitude sickness, even to experienced trekkers. Altitude gains of as high as 5,000 meters require critical attention.

It is essential to preclude the chances of altitude sickness and Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). The trick is to walk slowly and steadily, drink plenty of water (Don’t let yourself dehydrate), avoid alcoholic drinks or too much salty food, and follow your trek guide’s instructions. Don’t walk too fast thinking you are fit enough as it may result in getting AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) you are hiking at the world’s highest locations where the oxygen level is very low, so you will easily get tired and dehydrated resulting in chances of suffering with Altitude Sickness.

Altitude illness in high mountain journeys is a prevalent issue, however, it is preventable and wishes instantaneous remedy. However, if you act nonchalantly about symptoms of altitude sickness, it can get severe even lethal.

Mountain sickness often starts from an elevation of 3,500m. Our trekking leaders and guides are properly experienced and use oximeters regularly to monitor your oxygen degree for early detection of altitude illness.

Guides and Potters. Is it necessary?

Nepal Tourism Board has made it mandatory for trekkers to have a licensed guide with them throughout the trek while doing the high-risk strenuous trek, which also includes Langtang Heli Trek. However, hiring a potter is a personal choice. Our standard Langtang Gosai Kunda Lake Trek provides Potter service but if you are okay carrying your own stuff then you don’t need to hire a potter and it will also reduce the cost of the trek. Our guides all have comprehensive knowledge of the trail and are very apt with communication skills that can understand the needs and issues of even the most reticent person. They are familiar with all the subtleties and nuances of the trial and are prudent when it comes to facing such difficult situations.

Similarly, our potters, simply put, are superhumans. Even we cannot fathom their resilience, strength, and stamina. In places where a person needs to pant every few steps, our potters can carry your goods and reach your destination faster than any trekkers. They are just indefatigable physically and mentally. However, if you can carry your own bag then you don’t need to hire a potter which reduces your cost of the trek.

Breakfree Adventures provides both experienced guides and indefatigable potters with a standard Langtang Heli Trek package.

Meals and Accommodations

Trekking with Breakfree Adventures, we use the best accommodation facilities that can be found throughout the trail. The lower elevation region of Langtang has more facilitated hotels and lodges with private bathrooms, but as you enter deep into Langtang region hotels and lodges will start to become more basic, these lodges are often built based on local architecture and building techniques. In Langtang, you might have to share rooms with other trek members. There will be no compromise on hygiene and cleanliness though.

Meals throughout the trek can differ from place to place. At lower elevations like Syabru Besi and Chisapani, you might have options to choose either local and authentic food or Western dishes. But as you leave lower commercialized areas and enter the Langtang Region you will be fed, mostly authentic local dishes made from local produce. The staple meal is Daal-Bhaat, which comprises cooked white rice, lentil soup, chicken curry, stir-fried vegetables, spicy achaar, pickled radish, and salad. You can also get to eat Dhido and Gundruk, the national meal, as well. These heavy dishes will be served during lunch and dinner. Here is the list below will provide you with a comprehensive idea of what you are likely to get served during Langtang Gosai Kunda LakeTrek:

  • Spicy Nepali omelet with chili, onion, and tomatoes or piping hot porridge with milk

Lunch will be during the stopover en-route trek while you are trekking from one destination to another in the noon. It will be around small but comfortable restaurants or lodges on the way. The menu will be:

  • Nepali tea or a soft drink

Dinner is at the lodge where you will be staying overnight and the menu comes around with items like:

Permits required for Langtang Heli Trek.

As the trail mostly traverses the restricted regions of Langtang National Park, you will be requiring special permits to explore these regions. The permits that allow trekkers to enter and trek through the national park are essential. Here below is the list of permits required while doing Langtang Heli Trek.

  • Langtang National Park entrance permit.
  • Trekking Information Management System.

Embarking on Langtang Heli Lake Trek with Breakfree Adventures, we will acquire all the necessary permits to explore Langtang Heli Lake. You don’t need to think and stress about the permits and other paperwork. You just explore, enjoy, and relax.

Langtang Heli Trek earthquake

During the earthquake in Nepal in 2015, the village of Langtang was cataclysmically destroyed. Many houses and lodges were swept by the landslide and avalanche caused by the earthquake. Many locals, army officials, and trekkers lost their lives. But locals have been busy rebuilding the area after the earthquake with tea houses and lodges being rebuilt and reopened.

The Langtang Heli Trek trail passes through the ruins where the old Langtang village was buried by an avalanche.
